Thread: Tracking on GPS and DG don't match

  1. Default Tracking on GPS and DG don't match

Hello all. I was wondering if anyone can tell me how to get the tracking heading on the GPS to match the heading bug on my DG. They are off by about 7 degrees. When I track say 130, I have to put the heading bug on the DG at 137 to follow the correct heading on the GPS. Anyway to get these two to match correctly?

    Thanks

    Hi Monte,

Crosswind! .... Your having to fly a heading of 137 to track 130.

It could also be the gyro drift in effect, if you've enabled that from the realism settings page. Pressing "D" resets the drift by default.

    Ditto Monte...
I have the same readings as you...and I have pressed "D", but the reading between GPS TRK and the indication on my DG is still dirrerent.
    Is there something we're missing...Magnetic North/True North ???

Use shift Z to check for any crosswinds. Also look at the ball on the turn coordinator to see if it's centered, and the plane isn't in a constant out of trim slip.

With no wind, no gyro deviation, and okay trim, the GPS track & DG should agree. Has nothing to do with differences between true & magnetic headings.

For instance, with a direct crosswind from the left at 8 knots, I get a 3 degree difference betweeen the DG & GPS, as the nose of the airplane is pointed slightly to the left.

    Larry...

Right you are...should have checked both instruments on the ground...but...I set up a test flight this way:
DG indicates 360' and with the wind 090 @ 36, the GPS indicates 350'. With the wind 270 @ 36, the GPS indicates 010'.

I seem to be backwards...my nose seems to be pointing AWAY from the wind...

    please help...need straightening out...
