Default FlightSim.com's Nels Anderson tries a new way to fly!

When he's not flying his famous Piper Archer, Nels also likes to try other ways to get into the air!

Been there, done that. And all I can offer to Nels is to say that we're both too old for that kind of stuff (poor glide ratio).

Come on, now. It looks like he isn't any higher than one of his bumpy landings :) .

Is Bill connecting wires to the base equipment while Nels is up on the tower?

I 'gather' he was installing a phase-lock loop in middle of that 'string and can' rig (homemade tele-com system).(CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW?...GOOD! :-))

I think you are correct. It was a phase-lock sync to the audio freq in his humming "Nearer My G-d To Thee". I heard that is a popular song for tower controllers.

Actually these weather gadgets that are decent brands can be handy. They are often used with commercial computer interfacing apps that can provide weather data from these sensors. Some are actually synchronous serial formats (plus low voltage d-c on the cable). If you go to weather web sites with neighborhood readings some are just the enclosed near the ground temp/humidity types and others are up on the roof or tower with full blownwind and even a magnetic controlled dumpable rain gauge.

One of the original models back in the 70's was from Zenith/Heathkit that came with software written in Basic. Combine that with Javascript and you too can have your own local weather site. You can also send the data to sites like wunderground.com to serve your local weather reporting vanity.

Did you see in one of the pix Nels spinning the cups on the wind speed gauge? Also I hear that the new members of the club get the daily chore of feeding the rooster that sits on the weather/vane wind direction indicator.

(Just teasing Nels. You do a heck of a great job here and I'm sure with your local activities as well.)

Our local airport is so small we have no FAA provided weather station, so what you see is our pilot's group installing our own. Ultimately, we'll be able to see the airport weather via the Internet. Pretty neat what you can do with computers besides flightsimming :-)

For anyone not familiar, take a look at Weather Underground. In addition to the usual reporting features they have lots of info from home stations...might be one right down the street from you!

Had a look at the above link and found Napier NZ where I live lots of info. Founds some pictures also. One was taken at a beach about a 30 min drive south of Napier and has a shot of an island called Bare Island. They have spelt it Bear Island. LOL

    Looks like some great work!

Thing is, the local airport where I fly out of, has an AWOS, and the crumb bums didn't install it properly so you never get accurate winds from about North to Southeast.

For those not familiar with wunderground two things:

In the top query box you can directly type in an ICAO identifier. If the page comes up look under the stats box in the upper left. If you click on show metars it will open up an aviation tab with the current METAR. If radar is available there will be a thumbnail to click on (the thumbnail is live with the current tiny display). You can also pick a regional display that displays the data for adjacent radar. The aviation link to the right has links to US and eventually other situation maps.

They kind of place everything within none, one, or two clicks away all started by upper left choices.

It is really a nice site.
