Thread: THRUST FOR COMBINED RECIPROCAL/JET AIRCRAFT

Default THRUST FOR COMBINED RECIPROCAL/JET AIRCRAFT

Both Vladimir Zhyhulskiy's C-123 and Daisuke Yamamoto's C-119 models are aircraft with reciprocal engines/jet engines. In both cases, there is no percieved thrust(from jet engine(s)) as the throttle is advanced. Is there a way to add say 50% additional thrust as the throttle is advanced above 80%?

The C-119 had jet engines ? That's news to me and I logged quite a few flights in them back when they were the prime A/C for dropping paratroopers in the late forties and early 50s. All the Boxcars I ever flew in had two big radial prop engines.

I also saw lots of C-123's in Vietnam, none of which had jet engines.

    Seamus,
    Check attachments.

AFAIK, FS9 does not support mulitple engine types on one aircraft. All I can think to do would be to either grossly overpower the piston engines in the aircraft .cfg or alter something like the power scalar.

Thank you for the update Steve. I csn see the jet engine on top in photo #2 but can't make a jet engine out in Photo #1 but I'lll take your word that it's there. I see a date of 2003 in photo #2. My experience with the Boxcars was in the early '50s. When were these jet engines added? I know there were none in any that I flew in as an Army paratrooper. Was the Boxcar's jet engine something used just for takeoffs like the JATO'S ?

How about the C-123's ? I saw them in Vietnam and didn't notice any jet engines on them .

Thanks again Steve for bringing this old goat up to date.

    Hi,

The jet engines are on pylons under the wing in shot #1. They have doors closing the inlets when not in use.

The C-123's so equipped also had them on pylons under the wings:

    Hope this helps,

Thank you Tom, that photo shows the jet engine very clearly. My experience with these Boxcars was in the very early 1950's era. I'm wondering whether these engines may have been a later addition. And then they may have been on the planes that I flew in but not in use and I just took them for a wing tank or something. I don't remember seeing them.

As to the C-123's I've seen them on the ramp in Vietnam, didn't pay much attention to them but can't recall seeing those engines on them, but of course I may have just missed them.

Were these engines used like the old JATOs, just for taking off on short runways ?

Tom and Sgt Steve, I thank both of you for enlightening me about those old birds. When I went on R&R and flew to Japan during the Korean War, I wished that old Boxcar I was in had those jets and had them going full blast then, but alas, we just poked along with those two radials.

Would be nice for FS10 to support that..... Would like to take that Jet-powered Waco biplane for a spin... :P

    Hi,

    No problem.

Yes, they were relatively recent additions, in the Vietnam era I assume. Only some got the jets, so you might have seen some without them even in that era.

And yes they were normally only used for takeoffs, since these aircraft (as you say) were somewhat marginal when loaded up, especially from short runways. I would assume that they also allowed higher takeoff weights in hot/high conditions.

    Hope this helps,
