Default Best joystick for flight sims (HOTAS)? Should I buy a new joystick or a TrackIR?

(I know I've been making a lot of threads about flight sims, joysticks, and TrackIR lately, but this is the last one... err, probably...)

I'm currently using an MS Sidewinder Precision Pro 2 joystick. It's really starting to show it's age and while learning to fly (MS Flight Simulator 2004) I'm having a tough time and I think it's partially due to the crappy (?) joystick.

So... I'm wondering what is currently the best joystick for somebody who isn't a diehard flight simmer? (but perhaps I'll become diehard)

The Saitek X52 looks really nice and thats the one I'm leaning towards, but I've heard that the axes (axises?) don't respond very well and that the reliability is questionable.

...or instead of buying a new joystick should I buy a TrackIR 3 Pro? I'm tempted to buy a TrackIR instead of a new joystick, but what's the use of being able to see better if I can only barely control the simulator to begin with?

I am using both the x52 and the TrackIR with VE, and like them very much.

I had a little problem with the throttle jumping to half speed at first, but it turned out to be the order if installation with the Saitek command pad drivers. I can't remember the exact order but experimentation has it's rewards.

I also need to umplug my USB logitek wireless mouse for the TrackIR not to cut out during play. I just use the PS2 mouse that I have also connected.

These are just nit-pickie complaints, and I don't mind going through the little extra hassel of unhooking the mouse and reloading the profile in the joystick every time I hook it up. The result is a great sim flying experience. I have the X52 and throttle mounted to a chair, with the throttle on the side and the axis reversed. I fly helicopters 98% of the time, and the throttle has exellent response and works great as a collective.

Needless to say, like every one else, I love the TrackIR. It is the closest thing to VR that I will ever be able to afford. I have been flying MS simulators since version 1, and have always dreamed of being able to look around without fumbling with buttons and always over shooting my pattern turns etc. I am lucky enough to fly often for real with a friend and have about 48 hours of training myself. I soloed and have flown several solo cross country flights, and this head tracker makes it 'as real as it can be'.

I probably haven't helped you choose between them, I wouldn't fly without either of them.

Save your pennies and get both.

    Jim
