when you change from 800,600 to a higher resolution is there a way to avoid how things get smaller and stretched looking?

Try changing the monitor's refresh rate as well...
Hello fbobum,
In Flight Simulator there are screen sizes available in the SIM under Options > Settings > Display - Hardware TAB. 1024X768 or 1280x1024 as well as 800x600 are the ones needed to maintain the 4/3 aspect ratio - to keep things from looking stretched or distorted which can happen if you choose the other available sizes here.
Screen size in Windows Display properties will make your icons, menus and text appear smaller - however this adjustment should have no effect on FS2004. FS2004 uses it's own display settings as mentioned above.
hope this helps

Its also important to keep the relative dimensions the same, usually 1.33:1.0,
ie. 640x480
800x600
1024x768
1280x960 etc.
In vapilot's example the 1280x1024 is actually a ratio of 1.25:1.0, so the proportions will be slightly different, and round gauges may appear slightly oval as a result.

Text and boxes will be smaller at higher res. Notheing you can do about that except maybe go to desktop display properties and select a larger font size.

Thought this was the issue wray was having - distorted panels etc - picking a non-4:3 ratio number like I erroneously posted. You know I thought I calculated all of them to be 4:3 - that last one slipped by - Thanks for pointing that out Alastair :-eek - :-roll -- don't want to steer wray wrong :)
1280 x 1024 is 5:4 ratio
5:4 = 1.25:1. And your point is? :)
SIGLINE: "Stealth is where it's not." :D
"(...) 5:4 = 1.25:1. And your point is? (...)"
The point clearly is that 5:4 (1.25:1) is NOT 4:3 (1.33:1). These relationships being the major subject of this discussion, I kind of wonder what YOUR point is (anticipating grin)!
Be well!
