    Default FS2004 Blurry Spot Views

    Hi! I just got FS2004 and the panels are super, but the Spot Views are blurry. I have the Aircraft sliders at Ultra. I have a P4 3GB, 516MB, GeForce 5200.

    If anyone has any suggestions, I would appreciate them.
    Thanx, Mike Briody, Staten Island, NY

    Welcome to the Forum Mike.

    If you want to keep your sliders to max (several of us have at least one or two adjusted down some) you can set the limit of your frame rate to 20 or 25, etc. (mine is on 25) This will reserve some of the processing power for your scenery views to be clearer when the greatest possible frame rate exceeds that limit. There are differences of opinion here about this, but I've found that it helps.

    Also, don't set your distance to an unrealistic setting either. Real world pilots can tell you how far RW visibility is on a clear day, but I believe it's about 10-12 miles. Higher settings than this, is just wasting processing power for your scenery.

    FS has always been more processor dependent than the video card. Not that a great video card won't help, it will, all in it's own ways and area in the sim itself. But, overall performance will come mostly from a very fast processor. And I am sure your system has got that covered.

    If I were you, my next upgrade that will give you more for your money, would be to double your RAM (memory) and start saving for better video card. Your card will get you by for now, but a better one will improve things even better later.

    RAM is much cheaper than a video card now and you'll get greater benefit from it longer with everything. In several months, the top notch card that everyone is recommending for this version will be somewhat more affordable later on after newer ones come out.

    Every system seems to be somewhat different than others. So experimenting with various slider adjustments to "tweak" your sim to get what you want out of it really helps. And that's why MS designed it that way.

    You'll find several posts discussing this here and in other sections of the forum. Just search under key words like "blurries", etc. And you'll find the results that others have found. This is a great site to learn about our favorite simulator. There are lots of great sim & real world pilots here that are more than willing to help you out. But just try searching for the given subject first before posting a problem, a solution for it just might already exsist.

    As you might notice, I am saving for my better video card.

    Find the FS9 config. file under Documents\applications data\microsoft\FS9. Aplications data is a hidden folder so if you don't see it go to tools in the dropdown menu and click, show hidden files. Open FS9 Config, find the following lines and change the values to the ones here.

    TERRAIN_DEFAULT_RADIUS=50.000000
    TERRAIN_EXTENDED_RADIUS=60.000000
    TERRAIN_EXTENDED_LEVELS=7

    That should take care of the blurries.

    Hi,

    Thanx for your reply!

    I think I have sight distance at max. Another Simmer suggested I cut this to under 20 miles so I don't waste computer resources.

    I don't know what max dem area in cfg is.

    Thanks,

    Mike

    Hi,

    Thanx for your very complete reply!

    I have not tried your suggestions yet, I wanted to thank you first.

    I see that you have been around FltSim and the Forum for some time. When I started with FS98, I found Forum very helpful. I decided to use a different name in FS2004's Forum. I got a few replies and someone else had the same suggestion about setting miles.

    Thanks again,

    Mike
