Thread: Look at this prop picture please

Default Look at this prop picture please

My wife Just bought me a prop for my computer room (to hang on the wall for decor). I'm curious whether it is a real prop or one that is purely for decoration. What makes me wonder is that it is only about 10 lbs. (awfully light). Look at the bolts, however, they have some strange type of lock nuts which would be odd to put on a purely ornamental prop.

It is 6 ft. long. Can someone take a look at these pics and tell if it is a real prop or not?

I can't address the authenticity question, but certainly light weight is desirable in any part of an airplane, and some woods are both light and strong. Canoe paddles are quite light.

It is hard to see the hardware details on my system, but there appear to be cotter pins to keep the nuts from loosening due to vibration. Another method used is safety wire, which is run through a hole in the nut, twisted tightly and fastened to an anchor point.

It's nearly impossible to be certain from the pictures, but it has all the earmarks of a prop that was intended for use on an aircraft, from what I can see. Of course it's likely no longer in airworthy condition.

You might note that 10 lbs. on the very front of an aircraft is a lot of weight, when you figure the balance portion of weight and balance. And fixed pitch props for light aircraft are not really very heavy.

    "What a wife "

Ya, I have to admit that she's pretty awsome.

"You might note that 10 lbs. on the very front of an aircraft is a lot of weight"

True enough. I had somehow just assumed that a propeller would be quite heavy without giving it much more thought than that.

    Thanks all.

I'm pretty sure its a replica WWI prop purely for decoration. Oddly enough I saw it in SKY catalog this summer on a flight from Seattle to Flordia. I think it was in the Hammecher and Schlemmer section but it does look just like the one they showed in the pictures

I'd have to think that all those holes would be drilled out, if it was ever in use. With exception to radio control & control line aircraft, I've never seen
a large prop mounted on a single shaft. But then I'm not positive either!

There would also be markings where the perimeter bolts were periodically re-torqued as the wood compresses.

What's the purpose of the surrounding 6 bolts? They don't even go completely through the prop. Are they just there to secure the brass plate?

Here is a link to the quickest website I could find with a pic.

And yes, the bolts would go through the prop, if actually mounted to the engine.
