    Default Where's Charly?

I took off from Miami looking for Hurricaine Charley this afternoon. Checking the real radar Charley was approaching Orlando. I flew north along the gulf to Tampa, then east to Orlando. I had clear skys to Tampa then just a small bit of 7/8 overcast and ground wind of 24kts. So much for "real world weather".

Found exactly the same as you did. Am thinking that they evacuated the "nearest weather reporting station" personnel. :-lol

We just relocated to North Port Fla, Just days ago. If your looking for "CHARLIE" well he was here. Glad he is gone.He wrecked Charlotte county airport(PGD), and a lot more. Hope he gets lost ,and not to be found by any one.Coming from the Mountians of NY where we only had to contend with "BLIZZARDS" I find that there is "HELL" ,hidden in this land of sunshine. VIN

In about a month we are going to be in sunny Las Vegas, moving from upstate NY. Weather conditions there may get HOT in the July August September, with the two weeks of monsoons, but at least there are not blizzards, wind chills to -40F, air temps to -20, two and a half foot of snow before Christmas. Oh yeah, and its been so wet and rainy this spring/summer that even the moss is getting moss on it.

Sounds like a lot of folks moving out of upstate NY. Will the last person out please turn off the lights and lock the door?

First of all let me just say that what's happening in Fla is serious business and I don't want to in any way imply that the situation is "fun" for the people who are forced to deal with it. I wish the best for anyone in the path of this behemoth and offer my condolences to those who've lost loved ones.

Having said that, I couldn't resist firing up FS9 and taking a quick trip around the area to see how things looked in the sim. I loaded up the DF Archer and took off from Tampa at dawn and headed basically northwest. I'm using the freeware FSMetars program for the weather (and have the registered FSUIPC as well). Charly had already passed over Tampa so things had calmed down a fair bit, but even so as soon as the wheels left the tarmac I started to get hit by some pretty heavy buffeting which continued till I got up to about 3000 feet after which things were more calm. I certainly wasn't flying around in hurrcane winds or anything, but I must say there was definitely a sense of an "unsettled" atmosphere. There was alot of heavy and varied cloud cover and as I flew northwards, I could see a couple of pretty ominous looking thunderstorms on the horizon with alot of lightning flashes. Very atmospheric and really quite fascinating actually. I mean, when you stop to think about it its pretty amazing just how complex the weather in this sim is.

    "May" get hot???? He,he! :)

But I still like Las Vegas (my brother has had several homes & still a condo there), as well as I like the St.George area of southern Utah, and flights to Mesquite, Nev which isn't too far from Vegas.

Ladamson ---- no longer likes snow & mono-tone grey looking days.

I got sustained winds at 45 knots gusting to 68 at Orlando (KORL) last night, with default FS9 real world weather. Flew the Skyhawk to Daytona and somehow managed to land in a 36 knot crosswind. Earlier yesterday afternoon, shortly after Charley made landfall in Charlotte County, I set my plane at the airport just south of Punta Gorda and got clear skies. I then tried Ft. Myers and took off from KRSW hearing due north. It was obvious that the Ft. Myers weather report was right on, lots of driving rain, very low visibility and winds sustained in the 30's with gusts to 40, but as soon as I got over Charlotte County, the skies went clear and wind dropped to almost nothing. I picked up rain and significant wind again over Polk County. The apparent conclusion...with 140+ mph winds blowing over Charlotte County, there was no report available for real weather to use.

By the way, Tampa was almost completely unaffected by the storm, other than some moderate rain and gusts in the 20's. I live just north of Tampa and did not expect to be flying FS yesterday until the storm turned sooner than predicted. Sorry to all in southwest Florida, y'all took the bullet we thought was meant for us.

Back in '68 in Vietnam, we often used to ask that very same question - 'Where's Charley' - but unfortunately he, like your hurricane, always managed to let us know where he was eventually.
