Dear Radarman and Peter in Australia
Thankyou for the advice.I have been unable to respond until now because the problem(after re-installing, reformatting etc. several times over-I'm retired so had the time- it transpired that my expensive 15 month old Ti4200 had failed, only on fs and games.As I also do a lot of music scanning/recognition and LP to CD conversion I decided to upgrade and now have a 64b Athlon 2800+, KV8 mobo and FX5700/128 graphics card.The results are very satisfactory - with 4x antialiasing and all sliders maxed(I always use this as a reference because it's easy to set and remember)together with 38m mesh for many parts of the world and add-on detailed airports I get a minimum frame rate anywhere of 11 ie. just starting to be jerky, and an average of >20.
Anybody want a slightly used GeForce4 Ti4200/128???!!!!

I was surprised to see my "name" in a post description and then I remembered that I had told you to do a complete reinstall if you couldn't clean all the "remnants" of the old FS out of your system.
Sorry to hear about the hardware failure but pleased to see that you have a new faster machine and excellent video card (even if I'm an ATI fan).

I'm also retired. It's a great retirement hobby.
Thanks for the tip about the Ti4200. I'll watch mine.
