Default Tell me what I'm doing wrong with the default Piper Cub please........

For many weeks after I first got MSFS9,my favourite was the default Piper Cub and I flew it all the time without any hassles. Now after many weeks of flying all of the other aircraft including Bill Lyons excellent Piper Cub models and many other downloads I can no longer land the default Piper Cub without crashing.I've spent most of today trying and still can't.I get it down alright but then it flips.I've tried back stick, forward stick, centred stick, brakes,no brakes, and it either rears up and flips or it crashes nose down,I cannot get it to roll to a stop.I've recalibrated my joystick, though I new this was grasping at straws because I can fly all my other aircraft without a problem.I've read the notes on flying the Piper and on taildraggers and I still can't do it.What really puzzles me though is that I used to fly it all the time without hassles just a few weeks ago.

The Cub can be a tricky one to take-off and land. It takes a lot of rudder control. You don't happen to have auto-rudder on do you or maybe have your parking brake on or something.

Very difficult to land with any crosswind.

You need to have a setup that allows you to use left and right brakes. Also the wing on the windward side should be dipped a bit.

I find the efect a bit too pronounced because there's no feedback. Try setting the aircraft realism settings to half while you practice.

Thanks for the advice and suggestions.I've solved the problem, but now wonder just how realistic this model is.I must ask a guy out at the airport who fly's one of these.I was forgeting to put the trim forward to land, probably because the control is on the side rather than on the dash,so the nose was lifting into the air after I touched down irrespective of how slow I was going.

I played around a lot with the Cub soon after getting FS9. I can't be absolutely certain, as it's been a while now, but I do believe that for some reason Microsoft "disabled" the aerodynamic effect of the prop wash on the rudder. I do seem to remember editing both the .air file and aircraft.cfg file to make it behave a little better on account of this. Unfortunately I don't have the files any more as I ended up flying mostly the Comet, DC-3 and Learjet.

So I don't really believe the default model is terribly realistic, since in real single engined prop aircraft where the prop wash hits the rudder, the maneouvering effect achieved by this prop wash is quite substantial. I thus believe you would find the aircraft far easier to control if the rudder was aerodynamic at all speeds, rather than higher speeds as in the default Microsoft aircraft.

I know this doesn't really help you much, but I hope it goes some way to explaining the default model's behaviour.

Welcome to the club, I think we all share with you the this FS9s "CRAZY" CUB. There have been many posts re: this. You may want to check some of the posts in the archives.A real CUB in no way acts like this fs9 cub, if they did, there would be none around. As for me,I fly this CUB. Some ware along the way ,ID/L something called "CUB".
All I can tell you the guys name is"TOM GOODRICK". It made this CUB a little better to handle. However T.O.@landings still require your attention. No "LANDOMATICK" here. You may want to review John @ Martha for some flight instruction,They demonstrate how "EASY" it is to fly this CUB.(yep I said easy) "HAPPY LANDINGS" VIN ;)

I've noted & stated numerous times, since it's release; that the Cub's flight characteristics CAN change on the same computer & same settings. Varies from an exceptable takeoff everytime....... to un-controllable groundlooping destruction everytime.

I was happy to see your post Larry because I was beginning to think I'd dreamed about flying the Cub a few weeks ago without any hassles.I'm flying it alright again now as long as I use full forward trim for landing and stangely enough, for take off.Not realistic but at least it works,at the moment.
