Is there a big difference between the FSW Cloud packs and the stock clouds? (appearance/frame rate) I'm thinking about trying them but am wondering if I should leave well enough alone.

Just backup your old clouds, then try it. If you don't like them restore the old. You have nothing to lose.
THE most misspelled word on the Internet = LOOSE for LOSE
LOSE = something lost
LOOSE = not tight!
mate i use the FSW clouds and I couldn't live without them. i dont mind the drop in detail for the increased FPS. well worth it in my opinion.
Couldn't do without them.

FSW clouds are just great. At close range, there is a difference in quality, though they still are excellent visually. At longer distances, you won´t even notice the difference. It´s almost the only way to fly in an overcast with the weather slider cranked all the way right. Well worth it IMHO.
Regarding this topic I could do with a bit more help from you experts on replacing cloud file procedures etc.
The "read me" notes for FSW ask you to back up all original Cumulus 01 and cirrus files.There are a lot of cumulus files in the original set.Do you have to remove/back up all?Is there any significance in the "01"
Any detailed instructions would be appreciated.The only time my machine really slows down is when there are heavy cloud layers near some cities(I use the downloaded real WX all the time)so it would be good to get better performance in these conditions.
Also there appear to be 2 downloads,one about 1.7 mgb and the other about 4mgb.Whats the difference?The larger one doesn't have much info.
Thanks in advance
As long as i can remember, there are two sets of clouds: 1 in DXT3 format and 1 in 32bits format.
I personally selected the DXT3 ones ,as I guess they are better looking than the other ones.
As for the Cirrus bmp , I didn´t even replaced it, as cirruses are not very FPS demanding, so I left the default ones.
All thesse textures are found in the Textures folder under the main FS9 folder.
They replace the 1,400 kb default cloud textures with new textures that are 16 kb's. As you can see there is a dramatic difference in demand for memory space between them.
Also they don't look that different, except when you are right up to them, and even then it's not that bad.
Personally, I have created a Folder C:\FS9_Backups
Then, I just copied the entire folder into this folder...
IE if installing new textures, I copy the texture folder to it...
C:\FS9_Backups\texture
Then, if later after having no problems, and like the new textures, I copy the folder containing the new textures. The FSW clouds are so good, they are now my "backup" files. To me it seemed much easier to just copy the entire folder, then try to pick out individual files.
