Thread: sudden better performance!?

  1. Default sudden better performance!?

hi there, I was used to play fs9 in 1152 X 864 resolution or higher. All the sliders are normally far right, and my frame rates were 12 in default scenery, sometimes dropping to 5 with addons. Now I began to experiment with other resolutions, and nothing worked fine, every time my screen was half black. I mean fs was about 10" on my 17" screen. Sort of compressed screen.
Then I used the 800X600 setting which was the only other that worked fine, but my frame rates are now steady 25, every situation!

whats causing this? Why can I only have good fps and a full screen in 800X600 and not in other modes. I use higher resolutions with all my other games.

with experimenting, I found that 20 fps in high resolution wasnt as smooth flying as 20 fps in 800X600. strange...

Less pixels the comp has to work on producing for each frame. Or so I would guess...

Just curious, what are your cpu and vid card? That kind of performance increase is typical when lowering your resolution if the cpu and/or gpu are struggling at higher res.
I used to dispare because I would see no improvement when lowering the resolution, until it dawned on me that what really is the case is that I'm getting no decrease in performance from raising the resolution, thanks mostly to the 9700pro.
Also, regarding the screen size issue with some resolutions; some monitors require you to resize the screen after a resolution change. My previous monitor did that.

In 1152 X 864 resolution you are displaying 995,328 pixels per frame.
in 800 X 600 you are displaying 480,000 pixels per frame. This is half as much. You should get double the frames but if you see striaght lines being displayed at an angle other than vertical or horizontal, they will have more or bigger jaggies (the sawtoothed effect).

If your view is only 10" on a display setting, you need to adjust the settings on your monitor so that the display takes up the full screen. How you do this depends on the monitor but is generally on the controls on the front of the monitor or under a hinged panel on the front. By the way, this smaller screen size isn't changing the number of pixels being displayed. Only their size.
