Thread: Auto Landing ???

  1. Default Auto Landing ???

    Hi and thanks in advance.

I enjoy using FS 2004 (and also 2002) (flying in a boing 737-400 for instance) and I have got into flying with the ATC and setting my destination in the flightplanner.

I take of from (say) Manchester UK switch on the auto pilot and fly to Alicante Spain following the instructions from the ATC and I manage this OK with the auto pilot and the ATC telling me when to turn/climb/descend ETC but when I get to Alicante (or any other airport) I always end up going wrong trying to land???

I thought that the auto pilot could do it all but I don't seem to be able to(not sure where I am going wrong)

When I try to land by my own steering after turning the auto pilot off, well I struggle and sometimes I get it down but most times I am to short or long ETC.

    Help

PS. if you could type the answer Word for Word as I ama novice (but getting there LOL).

How about trying to land using your instruments? You could learn to land using the ILS at the airport (if available). I think there is a lesson about it in FS9. Also, if you dial the ILS freq in your NAV1 and click on the "appr" of the autopilot, the plane should catch the slope and align perfectly with the runway. You just need to disengage the a/p for the final touchdown...

    Blimey! that was quick.

One point I would like to make is that when I am flying towads the airport, ho do I know when to start trning away from the airport so that I can swing around to line up with the runway?

I don't want to appear daft??? but I hope you can understand that if I watched somebody doing it, then I would get some good tuition as it is now, I am guessing as to what to do.

Finally, I know that I can record my flight and replay it, can these saved files?? be copied and downloaded onto another computer and watched (obviously it has to have FS 2004 on it) and if so, is there any websites to download them from???

    Thank you from a novice.

Most aircraft on FS9 do not autoland, one freeware aircraft which will is the VC10, provided you have correct fuel and flaps and set the flare switch.Payware such as the PSS airbus, I believe will autoland but I have'nt tried it yet. The trick to getting a good IFR landing is to follow the ATC intercept vectors for the relevant runway, have correct flaps fuel load and speed so that the attitude is correct. It takes some practice but gives great satisfaction when you can "grease" the big iron.

Be sure to go through the Flight Simulator IFR lessons, they will teach you about how to navigate a jet and line it up with the runway for landing.

Also, if you're using GPS for enroute, be sure to switch it bac over to NAV for the ILS approach... The approach hold autopilot button doesn't really work if you're not using NAV radios on the ILS

If you really want a 737 that will autoland, pmdg's one, sure it's payware and not a cheapie either, but what a beauty, i did autoland in it once, and it put me right on the nail, perfect touchdown.
