Thread: Tower view

    Default Tower view

I recall reading in one of the forums about this subject but can't remember where! I would like to change my 'tower view' so that it does in fact refect the view from the tower and not from the ground inside the fuselage of the aircraft! Any ideas please?

There is also a way to change the tower view for a specific airport so that the tower view is in the same place where you've purposely set it and will always be there when you start a flight at that airport. Download and install AFCAD version 2.21 by Lee Swordy, as it will let you manipulate many facets an airport's operations without involving complex scenery designs. It involves some work on your part to read and apply the manual, but the changes it can make to your simming experience is pretty exciting for simmers (like us) who don't know the ins and outs of manipulating FS but would like to change a few key things. It's in the FS library; just search for Lee Swordy.

    Hope this helps,

    ABD,

I wanted to try to arrang a way to communicate in a personal fashion due to the fact it may bore others. I travel quit mutch and now have a Toshiba P25-s607, upgraded to 1 gig of memory. I also travel with a Mitsubishi (when in the car which is most of the time) 18 inch flat panel as the v-card will support 2 monitors. I sure woould like to ask a few questions. Please let me know if this is cool as I am sure with your experince you can offer experinced help to improve the preformance.

    Thanks.

    System:

I haven't got AFCAD yet but will download it shortly. I get the impression that each airport has to be edited! Isn't there a way to change airports globally like they used to be in FS2002 (or was it FS2000?)?

Yes, you have to edit each one if you use AFCAD. I've done a little research on how FS9 places its default tower views and reassigns it based on user inputs. No global findings yet, but as best I can tell there is no way to globally set the tower view for every airport within the structure that would be considered a physical tower location. One cool thing of many about AFCAD, though, is that it can be linked to FS. You simply:

    1) Slew in FS to where you're inside or above the tower (your preference entirely) while the airport in question is open in AFCAD,
    2) Tell AFCAD where to put the tower (a simple click on the spot where AFCAD reports your location from its link to your FS session),
    3) Input your aircraft's elevation from FS's slew mode readout,
    4) Save the AFCAD file and either do more airports or quit FS and restart it to have all the changes you've made take effect.

Kind of a pain to have to do this for every airport, I know, but you don't fly to 24,000 airports all at once (if that's any consolation). If you download a number of pre-made AFCAD files and install them, you may find that the author may have already done this for you.

Unfortunately, FS9 only locates the tower view one time, and that is the one at your departure airport (by default). After you've left your departure airport, you'll have to use the method described by abd to relocate your tower view, anyway, unless you use a program like Active Camera (payware) or FS Camera (freeware) that forces the tower view to travel along with your plane so that you get fly-by views where you used to get a set tower view (rough generalization).

Hope this helps and you had a good weekend,

    Kevin

Many thanks for your input - very interesting info. It makes me wonder why Microsoft allocated the 'tower view' to the runway in the first place! Anyway I shall try your 4 stage proposal and see how I go. Thanks again. Incidentally for those who need to tweak their sims to the ultimate I recently used the services of FSGS (www.fs-gs.com) and am seriously impressed with their assistance in getting my sim up to peak performance. I would recommend them to everybody who wants 'that bit extra'.

It seems as though FS sets the default tower view at any airport (where another tower view has not been specifically set) to match the tower view with the default flight at KSEA (or a slight variation thereof). I've been looking into this for some time, and there are, of course, some exceptions. One intriguing bit is how using AFCAD seems to change some of FS's default tower view behaviors, especially in conjunction with saved flights, but I can't go into many specifics (unfortunately due to my confusion over anomalous data). On a happy note, I've found that a combination of FS Camera and AFCAD have really lessened the degree to which I need to manually move the tower view in the map view interface.

    Kevin

EDIT: Oops. You're welcome! Glad I could help.
