I also get constant CTD problems. I have tried all known fixes and nothing helps. I know it is the seasonal CTD problem because it never happens when I switch to summer. Some people are very lucky and don't have the problem. But I would say the majority of the users suffer from it. In fact I would say everybody has it but it depends on where you fly and time of day. It seems to happen in mountainous areas with the snow textures enabled.

It is obviously a wide enough problem that this should be Microsoft's problem. In fact I question the legalities of Microsoft ingnoring the problem. I understand that this is a $55 program but it is a program we paid money for regardless of price. Plus a CTD problem is not minor but a critical error. Microsoft itself has said that they will address critical problems.

Whilst I've every sympathy for you with the CTD problem - I seriously doubt that"the majority of the users suffer from it."

There has been much discussion of this both here and on other forums but - given the number of forum members here and elsewhere( numbering at least 15-20000 is my guess), the number of those complaining of "seasonal CTDs" seems fairly small. The same few dozen screen names turn up time and time again.
Don't misunderstand me- I'm not saying there is no problem for some people. What I am saying is that, like many other problems that people experience with FS2004- EG low fps on some high level systems- I wonder if the cause of the problem really is FS9 itself- or possibly something else.

Possibilities that come to mind are individual hardware and/or software configurations that somehow produce a conflict?Individual user settings? Graphics drivers? - no doubt you could probably think of others.

One thing of which there is no doubt- FS9 will run beautifully on one PC and perform atrociously on another near- indentical setup. The real question is why this is so? -what can make such a difference?

Once again - you have my sympathy but I don't think you'll get a fix from MS.

    Dave,

Maybe not everyone is having the problem but it is a huge problem. Go to several forums and search for CTD. Plus here we get new posts everyday from people having this problem.

I wish it was some hardware configuration problem. Reason why I wish it was is because I know we are not going to get a fix from Microsoft. Problem is so many people with so many different configurations are having the problem you can't put a finger on it.

One thing of interest is just about everyone having the problem has a newer computer capable of running FS with all the settings cranked and a DirectX 9.0 card. The people with older computers and older video cards don't seem to report it as much if at all. So perhaps it is a problem with the DirectX 9.0 protocals causing the CTD?

It is still a big problem and Microsofts problem. I am sure they are in violation of several consumer protection laws. They have the responsability to research this problem and find a solution. If it is hardware then they need to let us know what types of hardware can cause this problem. It is there program and we paid for a license that provides access to working program. It is not about it only being a $50 program. We paid for a functional product and FS9 is not functional.

    longhaul747,

"I have tried all known fixes and nothing helps. "

I am afraid Seasonal CTD have been fixed 100% and if you got others CTD it is hardware configuration.

In the TERRAIN.CFG file in the FS9 folder, make a backup of the Terrain.cfg first, open it in Notepad and replace all and each MaskClassMap=1 AND MaskClassMap=3 to MaskClassMap=0. Save the file and re-start FS.

These change will only remove the under texture from the road and rivers, almost non noticable anyways.

-If you are using 3rd party landclass , you need to download the Joachim's fix and textures. As explainded, Patch for the global removal of the FS2004 of crashes when using ADDON Landclass or Meshfiles!

    http://babelfish.altavista.com/babel...p=de_en&tt=url

-There is some non compatible aircraft with gauge, also 3rd party landclass that`s cause CTD, Afcad. Do not use non compatible stuff with fs2004 even if they appears they works.

Others CTD can be related to the temp, fan, power, Drivers/tweaking overcloking is not recommended at all etc.

    Chris,

I have tried that fix and it did not make a difference for me.

I don't think it is heat related because I am running in the 27C to 35C range.

I also don't get the CTD when the season is set to summer.

My FS2004 installation is 100% stock right now.

    longhaul747,

Be sure you did not forget one single MaskClassMap=1 AND MaskClassMap=3 set them ALL to 0, there is many many of these, set them all to 0

Also use Joachim's fix and textures, both fix 100%

Make flight plan when you CTD always, or save your *.FLT *.WX flight before the CTD, and I will test with my fs2004.

    Chris,

You have just pointed out something and if this fixes my problem I will buy you a beer.... :)

I scanned my terrain.cfg and all I could see is MaskClassMap=3 so I changed all the MaskClassMap=3 to MaskClassMap=0. If it has one or two MaskClassMap=1 then it never got changed.

Oh please lord let this solve my CTD problem :-jumpy

I am going to try it now and I will let you know. I know the perfect flight. EDDF - ENBR. Crashes everytime flying out of Frankfurt from 1 minute to 30 minutes from departure.

I think you can't blame DX9- I've had FS9 running here on 3 different PCs and 3 OS.
The newest PC ( this one ) isn't that new but good enough to carry FS9 with zero problems (AMD 2000xp/5122MB DDRAM/ T14200- 128mb/WinXP) runs FS9 at 30fps (locked) most places. Never CTD ed in 300 hrs plus online flying plus ??? hours offline.(Excludes 2 CTDs caused by dodgy railroad replacement textures- sorted within hours)
2nd one is 1Ghz AMD/512mbSDRAM / old Nvidia 32MB video card/WinME - struggles but still manages reasonable performance considering the limitations of the video card.No CTDs
Last was old 700Mhz AMD/256mbSDRAM/ATI 9000 -128mb card/Win98SE- again struggles a bit but manages most things . No CTDs

In addition my son has an AMD2800/1ghz DDRAM/ Nvidia FX 5600/WinXP - runs FS9 beautiflly - again no CTDs in several hundred hours of flight.

Apart from the first on (Mine) the others have no extra scenery installed- any scenery addons in mine are minimal( got lot's of planes tho !!) - mainly enhanced water/clouds etc - no AFCADs .

I know this doesn't help you - but I think it's a fairly good indication that DX 9 isn't the problem - if it was I would have exoected the Nvidia 32mb machine to have quit on the job straight away.

Anyway - hope it all gets sorted for everyones sake.
