Thread: Oh WHY does this keep happening???

  1. Default Oh WHY does this keep happening???

Short flights are fine, but seems that flights of any duration all end up with FS9 doing a vanishing act and just leaving me with FS meteo running. I can almost guarantee this most frustating occurence will happen as ATC clears me to start descent to destination.. and another flight of an hour or more is just lost into the ether..

Running XP Pro, ATI Rad 9600 Pro with the latest Omega drivers, AMD 1700XP.

Anybody else getting this problem???? If so please let me know!!

    Thanks guys

How much ram. I had a similar prob. when I use to run FS2002, after 50mins it use to shut down. I was running 512mb of ram at the time, stuck in another 512mb had no problems since on either 02 or 04.

I have it one flight only.Innsbruck to Sion.FS just vanishes about half way through the flight. Not even a good night and thank you, nurse.

Like you I have 512 only but no other flight I do seems to suffer, long or short.

I've got a P4 2,4 HTT (@ 2,53) with 512 MB, and I've flown for 12-14 hours without a problem. Sometimes though I can get an error screen with the options "Send" and "Don't Send" the error-reports. I assume these errors are generated from a bug within the software that might cause some memmory allocation error on some machines. I think it's fairly certain that if you upgrade to ECC memory, you will not get those problems... Memory-related problems are far more common than people think, mainly because they buy junk no-name memory that will work most of the time, but with RAM-consuming tasks such as video rendering, gaming etc. it can fail. I've used both no-name and brand memory, and had problems with both and I've had modules that worked fine of both. Bottom line is that if you buy brand memory, it's more likley to work, especially if you put in the extra $$ to get an ECC chip.

There are lots of things that can cuase a CTD ( crash to desktop ) - among them are bad scenery, graphics issues, virus checkers, auto updates - etc.

If it happens at a specific location every time then you can be pretty sure you have a scenery issue. Do you have any virus checker or other programs that do an auto update?

512M ram is more than enough to run the sim - your problem lies elsewhere.

Try disabling all add-ons and then fly and see what happens. It's a trial and error process.

Sometimes a weather program will generate an error if theres a communication error with the weather server but this usually just dumps to windowed mode.

I just had this happen on a short flight from Luzerne to Zurich. FS just went "poof". No error report, not nothing, I was just left staring at my desktop. I wasn't in contact with ATC. Don't think it's a RAM issue either, more than likely a scenery addon, maybe landclass or something.

    Chazzie,

I am loaded with 1gb of Crucial PC2100 RAM, slow nowadays, but it's what my MOBO accepts. You mention ECC memory...is that something you have to buy (hardware), or just a BIOS setting. I've seen the ECC memory setting in my BIOS.

ECC memory is a memory stick with Error Correction (Error Correction Chip I think it's abbrivated from). So yes, it's new hardware and they are usually very expensive, but it will eliminate any suspicions of memory error. The ECC chips are usually used in servers. About the setting in your BIOS I assume you're supposed to switch it to enabled or something if you've installed ECC modules, and I'm fairly certain it will work very poorly if you change it without the ECC modules.

Check out this thread : http://www.flightsim.com/dcforum/DCForumID21/10392.html

It might shed some light on your problem. It helped me out.

edit: ...and 512MB will run fs just fine as long as you don't have three or four other applications open.
