    Default New Water Textures

    Roger,

Thank you VERY MUCH for the work you did on the new water textures for FS9! They look far better than the default textures and have added a much needed "realistic" look to the lakes, rivers, ponds, oceans and any other bodies of water.

    Again, thank you!!

    Mike

PS - Anyone not knowing what I'm talking about, in the new files for today (flightsim.com) the file name is r_water0.zip. You can also see screen shots [link:www.flightsim.com/cgi/dcforum/dcboard.cgi?az=show_thread&omm=0&om=30470&forum=DCForumID8|HERE]

Much improved textures WITH water reflections enabled. However, a bit too dark (for my liking) without water reflection. After taking careful note over the past couple of weeks (in real world flight), I have to say MS did a pretty good job (overall) on the default water color in FS2004, so long as water reflection ISN'T enabled. I will admit, it is a bit too bright (based on sceenies I've seen) WITH reflections enabled. Nice to have options though, and Roger sure did a nice job. I just can't take advantage of them cause my old GF2 GTS doesn't support water reflections. :-(

PS; IRL, water color is VERY MUCH dependant on time of day, sun angle, overcast condition, and water conditions (ie., sediment present in the water). As such, and based on current levels of technology, water color is one of those areas where a great degree of compromise is needed. Also, much depends on personal taste. As it is, I prefer the overall appearance of the default water in FS2004 over FS2002.

Ah, the GF2 GTS card. I got one of them. Got it from Hercules. It's semi-retired now. What an awesome video card that was. I remember paying $360 bucks for that card when it was the latest and greatest and I got more than my monies worth out of it. She still runs EAW. I think I'm just gonna have to have it mounted and displayed on my mantle next to my EAW CD rather than just throw it out. I'm getting older now; so what if people think I'm a bit eccentric.

I am glad you are only semi-retired and not fully-retired as I am since you have been a great help to me the last couple of years. I just wanted to say Thank You !!!

By the way have you heard anything from ATI re: the fix for flickering and corrupted text?

    Thanks again

Thanks Saul; I'm hearing the newest ATI driver doesn't fix the flashing menus. Not surprised as I think the 3.7 was an FS2k4 pre-release build. Next time around they should get it fixed. They're pretty good about that. They said they plan on releasing new drivers every six weeks or so.

I feel I've gotton every red cent out of my old Hercules GF2 GTS. NVidia did an excellent job on it and in some aspects, it's better than certain GF3 and GF4 cards (as compared to the systems a couple of friends of mine have). Though I wish I were in a financial position to buy a new system, my old machine keeps chugging along just fine (though with limitations) in great part due to the GF2 card.
