Thread: LASHO Program?

    Default LASHO Program?

    Evening everyone-

I'm running through my Test Prep book starting my first serious studying for my PPL exam, and I found mention of something called a "LAHSO Program". Does anyone know what this is?

According to the question, Student Pilots shouldn't participate, whatever it is.

    Thanks-

LAHSO is Land And Hold Short Operations. Basically what this means is that traffic is using another runway, so you are cleared to land, but to hold short of the other runway.

This is not always permitted, and when it is permitted, it requires some degree of experience, depending on the field, traffic and existing conditions in order to judge how feasible it is, thus the restriction of student pilots.

    Ah, thanks Larry!

Now that I hear what it is, I realize I have unwittingly participated in this program myself! At my home base (http://www.airnav.com/airport/KPWM), I was cleared to land runway 18 and hold short of 11/29.

I hope your instructor was in the plane or you should have said, "unable."

You couldn't have been a unwitting participant in a LAHSO clearance. The controller has to specifically ask you if you can accept a LAHSO clearance and you have to give an answer. The reason for that is another aircraft is taking off or landing on the crossing runway and they don't want you extending your roll through that intersection or going missed and creating a separation conflict. They ask, you accept if you want, and now you have the responsibility to not roll into the departure or landing path of the aircraft on the crossing runway or going missed. If your runway isn't long enough for your landing roll to come to a complete stop, or you aren't proficient as a pilot to do it right the first time without messing up the approach, you have to say "unable". That's where it really becomes necessary for you to have an idea how much landing roll your aircraft uses to answer that question in a hurry without having to look in books while you are trying to fly. If the runway is wet a LAHSO clearance won't be issued. At my airline, we have in our Ops Specs a listing of airports around the nation in which the landing performance of our aircraft will permit a LAHSO clearance. Some of the pilots I've flown with won't accept them for any reason. The controllers at your airport probably tell you to hold short of the crossing runway so they have the option to let someone else have it if they need it or want it.

    Hi guys-

Call off the dogs ;-). They asked me if I could hold short of runway 29 on a full-stop landing. This gives me 4000' of runway. I can land in 1500'. I didn't even use half the available runway.

Furthermore, the way the question was phrased, I had no way of knowing that I couldn't accept the clearance. They asked me if I could accept a landing clearance where I had to hold short of 11/29. They made no mention of any "program", nor that student pilots weren't able to participate. I had no reason not to accept the clearance, so I did. Yes, I was solo, but again, I didn't know I was breaking a rule, and I didn't even come close to causing a dangerous situation.

    Kindest Regards-

    Matt,
Your instructor should have told you this and honestly it should have been a question asked you on your presolo test.

The biggest problem with land and hold short isn't stopping in the required distance. It is what are you gonna do if you have to go around? There is really no procedure besides miss the other guy.

Your flying into Albany International. Landing on runway 28, there is a Kingair on final to runway 1. Its a bouncy day and you have never flown into Albany. You are vectored to a long straight in. As you start to descend you notice its getting very bumpy. You fight the controls and those string of landing lights to the south don't help your nerves. If the winds are right you are gonna get rock and rolled as you cross a ridgeline just before the approach end of 28. The wind shear slaps you around and you find yourself lining up with the runway lights. What do you do? Student pilots do not normally have the experience or skills to make a decision or to horse a plane down.

    Bob-

You're right. I'm not one to pass the buck if I'm at fault. However, in this case, I'm not. It's not my responsibility that I wasn't told of this program. My CFI, if anyone, is at fault.

Additionally, I wasn't flying into Albany, I was flying into Portland, my home airport, in good weather, with no windshear and no ridgeline.

Sorry if that was a bit harsh. Just wanted to defend myself.

Again, I'd take the blame if I was at fault. But I'm not. So I won't. End of discussion.

Thanks for the advice, though. I do appreciate it.
