Thread: Stay in pattern request?

    Default Stay in pattern request?

Ok...this might be a stupid question, but I am going to ask anyway. Is there a way (when just starting out) using ATC to request to stay in the pattern and do a full stop landing? (i.e. take off, circle, and land) Every time I request to take off and "Stay in Pattern" from ATC it sets me up for a touch and go. Do I have to request a different form of departure (such as "Straight Out") to get back to the option of a full stop landing?

    Thanks!

after TO you change the request from touch&go to full stop landing.

You could use the depart straight out option. What you would then do is fly the pattern and recontact the tower to request your full stop landing. There may also be an option with the stay in the pattern option for cancelling landing request, then asking for a full stop landing. You usually get locked into the approach once you are on the downwind leg once passing the threshold of the approach end of the runway.

Ok...I will try that. Maybe I was always trying to change it to a full stop landing too late.

    Thanks for the replies!

What about deciding to leave the area while you are on the downwind leg? I was doing touch and go's at Flagstaff and then decided to peel off and fly to KGCN... 40 minutes later, approaching KGCN I could tune KGCN tower and listen to traffic, but everytime I punched the ATC call button I had one option: Contact Flagstaff Tower. LOL!

Oh, in case you're wondering, there was no option while on downwind at Flagstaff to request a departure, just 'full stop landing' which isn't what I wanted to do of course... I could be missing something here... I'm ready to feel dumb if someone knows how to avoid this.
