Thread: Can't get rid of jaggies: 9800

Default Can't get rid of jaggies: 9800

Hopefully someone can help me out here:

    Just recently got a 9800 for my P4 1.8Ghz, 512 RDRAM, XP Pro - latest Cats. - 4xAA, 4xAF - 1028x764

Still getting "jaggies" when flying - I've tried turning Anti-Aliasing on and off in The Display/Hardware section, with no effect.

Most everything else is set to High.

In other games, the AA works great - what do I need to do in MSFS to get it to look better?

    Thanks.

Set your AF to 8x. I have mine set at 4xAA, 8xAF.

I think I may have stumbled on something - MSFS uses Direct3D and not OpenGl? (I was reading through a FAQ here on this board) I'm new to MSFS, so I may not have the right information on this.

    Thanks again for your help.

Set your card up in the ATI control panel under the D3D tab. Then turn off that AA box in the sim settings. I run 4xAA & 16xAF.

The article says to turn the AA on under "Hardware" - you say to turn it off. Why?

    Here are a few shots

    http://www.flightsim.com/dcforum/DCForumID8/30046.html

These were taken with 4xAA and 8xAF. My FPS hang around 15-20...ocassionally dropping to about 10-12 at dense airports. Most of my sliders are maxed out.

You asked why to turn off AA under hardware...well it tend to create somewhat of a FPS(framerate) hit. Plus with it enabled in the Videocard setting for ATI you AA is definitely evident. The shots that were taken ad the AA off in the Sim.
When you get a chance do a search on ATI cards. There is a vast wealth of (VALUABLE) tweaking information.

Let the video card control the amount of AA. Under the D3D tab; set 4xAA & 16xAF. I run performance AF. Set Texture Quality on max; set Mipmaps on max; set vsync on; set Truform to OFF. Max out your resolution. The card likes 1600x1200x32.

In the sim's settings/display/hardware set mipmap slider on 4. Max everything else on that page. Run trilinear filtering. Max everything under aircraft. Under weather set visibility at 90 miles; max cloud coverage; set cloud density on high. Under Terrain set Mesh at 90 percent; texture quality maxed; set Scenery Complexity at very high, same with dynamic scenery. I run autogen on dense; but you can run it on very dense. Check all the boxes and max out all the effects. Leave the AA box unchecked. Leaving ground shadows off gives a nice little boost too. Remember, your card menu is handling the AA & AF. Go for a text flight. Tweak as you need too. You might want to run AI low and maybe set mesh down a bit more with that processor.

    Bigshot -

Thank you SO MUCH! Looks like all the great screenshots I see in this forum now! Frame rate is really choppy, but livable - I'm sure this is because of my proc. I set target frame rate to unlimited - is that what I should do?

More importantly, when I went back in to IL2:Forgotten Battles - the thing looked AMAZING!! Super-fluid motion - at a higher resolution! - you're right - I get better frame rates on this card at a higher res.

Thank you again for helping me out!!

I set my max framerate at 30 in FS2k4. Seems to like it there. Your video card is wanting more data faster from that processor and can't get it fast enough. These high end video cards depend on and need a fast processor and run much better with one. When you get a chance, upgrade the processor and you won't have much if any problems with framerates. The terrain mesh slider and the AI slider seem to depend totally on the processor so those are two sliders you're gonna want to watch. I run IL2 maxed out at that res. Looks great and is smooth.
