hey, looks like u have some spyware into your computer :-(, to get rid of it u should download a program called Ad-Aware, it's like an antivirus but it gets rid of that kind of stuff, hope it helps :)

Are these grey boxes with text in them or are the actual ads? The grey boxes are different than pop ups. Just as annoying though.

If they are the grey text box advertisments, check out this thread from the PAI tech forum.

If you're running WinXP, right click on the My Computer icon and select Manage from the menu. From the list on the right-hand pane of the Computer Management window, double-click on Services and Applications. Then double-click on Services. Scroll down to the entry which has Messenger in the Name field. Highlight that entry, right-click on it and select Properties. In the General tab, choose Disabled from the Startup type: dropdown list. Click on OK to close the window. This will prevent the Messenger service from starting when you boot. Now, to stop the service in the current session, right-click on the Messenger entry and select Stop.

Note: the Messenger service has nothing to do with Windows Messenger, or MSN Messenger, or any of the other popular instant messenging programs. Disabling the Messenger service will not affect those programs.

Yep, it's to do with Micro$oft Messenger AND WinXP.

You won't get it if you use Win98se ;-)
aaaaaaahhhh, good ole trusty Win98 ;-)

The Windows Messenger IM program is NOT the cause of those gray popup ads - it's the Messenger *service* that's run by XP/2000 - two completely different things.

Get Ad-Aware from http://www.download.com, do a search for it. Once you install it, you will need to update it prior to running a scan on your machine. I also recommend to stop visiting hacker/porn sites or even Kazaa as they install spyware software on your machine without you knowing it.

I would not be messing around with Services if you are not familiar how Windows XP works.
