Default "Will not update for FS2004. Addon." How do you feel about those sources?

My initial response is that with as many suppliers as there are now, (and I am sure it will be growing), I will not be purchasing anything from anybody from whom I bought payware for FS2002 and refuses to upgrade it for FS2004.

Some items will have an update, but if the cost is prohibitive in my opinion, those suppliers will also be wiped from my wish list permanently. (and by all means I am NOT talking about FSUIPC and the like items. It was free anyway and this is the first time any restitution was requested.) I am trying to be objective, not flame anybody.

My number one example is a combination of a 747-400 and 777-200 which are two of my favorite addon's for which the supplier states that "no update will be available". Totally new ones will be designed for FS2004. They are updating some of their birds, but not these, which are among my favorites.

Well, this is fine if they are supplied free (Ha hA!) or at a reasonable update like cost to update the ones I already purchased. Otherwise, I will erase this source from my mental database permanently, along with all other like sources. There are other sources which are updating their same plane designs. Those sources will be from where I purchase my FS2004 addons.

Am I just being hard to get along with, or is this a reasonable reaction?

    What do you think?

It sounds like you will be sitting back waiting for some "new" developers to come along. I don't have a problem with having to buy a new version. It takes hundreds of hours in most cases to create a top notch product, so why should they not be compensated for it?

I agree. Time and talent have every right to be rewarded. I suppose anyone who thinks that PAYING for these services is excessive, could always design thier own planes, sceneries etc. to thier own FREE specs.

Guess what PAL, you have nothing at all to complain about.

Those products were created for FS2000 (and some for FS98) and updated at NO charge to you to work in FS2002.
That cost the companies in question serious money.

They NEVER promised to update them for FS2002 when they were released, nor did they promise to update them to FS2004 when they were released or updated for FS2002.
In fact, they state specifically FS2002 required (or FS2000 or FS2002 required in case of some products).
Therefore you have no rights AT ALL to expect a free upgrade to FS2004.

To update them AGAIN for FS2004 while not making them look very bad in their product catalogue (if at all) would take a huge investment similar to what it took to create them in the first place.

The FS business is the ONLY one where SOME customers seem to expect free upgrades into infinity.

You should be grateful for the upgrades you DO get, not angry about the ones you don't.

Or they could try to get an HP-Ux machine with free upgrades and patches into eternity.
They'd be horrified about the support contract which is a requirement for purchase and costs several thousand dollars a year for a decent installation :)

    Darrell:
Please do not misunderstand me, I agree with you. I am not taking issue with their being compensated, or developing a new version, nor am I talking about "new developers to come along". Quite the contrary, I am talking about developers who already have my $$$, in some cases, several. (How about SimFlyers for example who are updating their scenery. Sure would hate to have to spend another couple of hundred $$ for the same scenery adapted to FS2004).

I am taking issue with those who are not updating their present product for which they have already received compensation from me, which in some cases I feel are excellent products. No issue with their product or past service. (well, mostly anyway, past issues are academic).

I am not on a hostile battle. The choice is theirs. I am sure that their opinion is that this is the way that they can receive the most compensation, particularly if the product wasn't received that well in the past anyway. With you, I say more power to them.

I also have a choice. My preference will be to go with the developers which update their product, rather than can it and try to get me to pay the full price again for a new version of the same bird. To me this is a support issue, not a supply and compensation issue.

Also, as I said in my initial post, some "reasonable" compensation for the updates is perfectly appropriate, but I will not be paying the full price for any of the same items.

    Thanks for your reply.

    You are right PAL!

But I will be purchasing from the developers who do, because they give better support than those who don't.

And I will be very happy to pay a price, as long as it is reasonable (in the sight of the purchaser I realize.) I will not pay a full price for a new version of the same thing though.

    Thanks for the reply PAL.
