How does fs04 compare with fs02 in terms of fps with the same settings (apart from the 3d clouds)?
I've been having sleepless nights about this for a while now...:-(
Thanks for your help

I'm going to go out on a limb and say there is little framerate difference between the two if clouds and water textures are not factored in.

I will go a little further out on a limb... :)
I havent looked deep intoit yet, measuring actual rates and all, but this version is just plain smoother then 2002, I have yet to experience any sort of stutter really when flying my GA planes around the Ohio area, and the scenery levels are actually set a little higher then 2002 was (slider wise)!
I have been very pleasantly surprised, 2002 with the same level of graphics does not run nearly as well. (New mesh, landclass, 3d clouds etc..)
Though the one slider I have down is the clouds, they are a frame killer :)

You are going to lose sleep when you get FS9, but not from frame rate concerns. You will most likely be up all night flying. I think you will be pleasently surprised. You will get at least the FRs you are getting with FS2002 but with more graphics and quality.
Don't worry, be happy. You need to get your rest, you are going to need it.

Thank you gents (I assume) for your replies, I am considerably relieved as I got reasonalbe perfomance on my machine even though it's not that hot and a upgrade is not immenant (although in the near future I hope).:D
Here's a test pic. Same airport, same slider settings (max) same weather, etc. I couln't post the other pic so I'll send it in the next message
But the results seem to agree with what has been mentioned. Very little difference in fps performance. In some cases slightly better. Except in one area. Weather. It seems that the weather preset from th menu doesn't effect performance as much when compared to the dynamic weather. I encountered a large frame rate hit during thunderstorms. But when I picked thunderstorms in the menu weather, the rates dropped very little.
Here is the same airport in 2004, even same runway & direction, etc and the rates are very little different. Again, the 15min updated dynamic weather seem to greatly reduce fps. Mine fell down to 7fps
Dunsul.....Whats your system specs?

On my 900 MHz Athlon, 256MB RAM, FX5600, when I first fired it up and raised the default settings to be close to what I used in FS2002, the frame rates were roughly comparable, even with clouds in the scenic Caravan flight. I've played with higher settings of some things, and in some cases frame rates dropped to very jerky (2-6 fps), but at the settings I first used (and what I'm going back to), it's a definite improvement overall, with comparable smoothness.
I've even found power lines, telephone poles, and even a gas station, all in the Denver area.

More than anything, that is a great comparison of the improved scenery (terminal) area and concrete textures.
Thanks.
