  1. Default Nels - New England Requests

    Greetings!
Nels - should you have the time, could you post up some quick pics of a few New England airports?! We've seen Boston in some posts already, perhaps a shot of PVD, BDL, and BTV?

You're going far above the call of duty responding to specific requests - no prob if you can't get it in.

ALSO - I found my FS4 box in the basement of my parent's house today. A working 3.5" disk contained the following...

    Code:
Documentation: Worcester, Mass., incl. Worcester Municipal Airport (ORH)

                      MASORHNA.DOC - The file you're reading

For some reason, the entire central part of Massachusetts is an empty
hole on SD-12. This despite the fact that Worcester Muni is a large
airport with regularly scheduled jet service. Even the major roads
through this area such as the Mass Pike and Route 2 are missing. As
a result, this became an area wide scenery design project rather than
    the usual single airport project.

This scenery actually includes four airports: Worcester Muni (ORH),
Oxford (MA08), Spencer (MA10), and Sterling (3B3). Worcester is done
in a great deal of detail while the others have fairly minimal detail.
Sterling was not on any of the USGS maps I had so it has the least
    amount of detail.

Lots of buildings have been added to give the feeling of a city
environment, since Worcester is the second largest city in New
England. It doesn't have many really tall buildings but the few it
does have are included in the downtown area along with many other
larger buildings throughout the area. Worcester has many colleges
and several campuses are included. I went to school at Worcester
Polytechnic Institute (WPI) and that campus is done in great detail.
You'll see WPI just off to your left when heading east directly off
    the end of rwy 11.

Other major scenery details that have been added include Route 90
(Mass Pike), Route 290, Route 195 and Route 9. Far to the north
of the city Route 2 has also been added (since you can easily see
its lights at night) and a portion of Route 495 has been enlarged
to a full 4-lane road so you can also see it at night. Mount
Wachusett, the tallest thing in eastern Massachusetts at 2006 feet
is included north of the city.

For navigation, the rwy 11 ILS on 110.9 has been added, along with
NDB's on 392 and 279 to provide the approaches shown in the FAA
approach plates. ATIS on 126.55 and tower on 120.5 are also
    included.

Be sure to fly this scenery during the night. The lighting effects
provided by SEE03 are spectacular! You'll also find road signs
along the major highways and a row of electric towers provided by
    SEE library #2.

Well, that's quite an old find! I was a pretty active scenery designer back in the FS4 days. I've always like creating things, just don't have the time to do it any more with the web site taking up all my time.

I certainly don't mind visiting some familiar local airports in FS2004. Here are the ones you mentioned.

    T.F. Green in Providence (KPVD):

Thank you kindly for the shots! Looks like they added the "new" taxiway on the south end of the field at PVD, but not much else is new... no matter... following in your FS4 footsteps and collaborating on a PVD G-Max project.

I am attempting to transfer FS4 from 5.25" to 3.5", and then get it running on my computer. Screenshots to follow, if I can get it working...

    Looking forward to FS2004!!!!

It must be hard for them to try and keep up. I was just updating my JeppCharts yesterday (airport layouts and information charts) and noticed that one of the runways at Providence is now a taxiway. FS2004 still has it as a runway. Must have happened quite recently.

BTV is gonna need some help :-) Good thing I've been working on a new update for it. Also the default landclass is still off. everything on the south end of the airport isn't fields and trees..... it shopping centers and light industry. Hope FS Genesis land class works ok in 2004

Hmm.. are those the official "flyable" charts? I've seen it go both ways on them... AIRNAV.COM says it's both!

By day, it's a VFR runway...

    By night, it's airline parking/taxiway!

Perhaps they finally made a decision to close it down.

Enjoy, and thanks for the shots!

I wonder if I-89 will go nuts with the elevation data north of runway 15? If FS2004 contours roads to the ground, perhaps things will look a little more realistic...

Always hope when I'm driving up to the lake that I'll catch some air guard operations landing over the highway, or at least SOME sort of plane. :)

I'm curious about the elevation data, too... the PVD shots looking south show a hill/cliff in Greenwich harbor that only shows up for me when I use the FS Genesis mesh files... perhaps they've upped the terrain mesh resolution.

Best time to see the 16's is between 1 and 2 in the afternoon. there is a great spotting location along runway 33/15 at the intersection of taxiways Hotel and Golf. To get there drive to BTV and drive past the terminal and parking garage. At the end of the street it takes a 90 deg left turn but dead ahead is a small street with a couple of houses on it. Stay straight on this street and you will run into the airport fence and there is a small parking area there that is very popular with spotters. The city even puts out trash cans and some of the local spotters help keep the area cleaned up. the best place on the airport to watch planes is the old tower which is open but I haven't been there since before 9-11 so I'm not sure what entails getting there now.

JeppCharts are not "official", but Jeppesen is about as good a source of information as you can get so if they say it's a taxiway you can bet that it's true.
