Thread: Runway snow

  1. Default Runway snow

I was never able to figure out how to get snow on the runway in fs2k2, I saw a ways of backing up deleting pating ect...,

Is there a way to see snow on the fields and runways in FS2004.

How about the lakes being froozen, Bush Flying?

    Thank you.

"it doesn't even slide how fun is that?" For my fellow real world pilots, take note.

I was landing at an uncontrolled field west of Chicago after about a 3 inch snowfall...no big deal in Chi-Town.

I had been communicating with the unicom operator from about 10 miles out. He gave me the local "winds and active" info. Obviously, the field was open and there were no warning or cautionary comments made. The runway was covered with snow but assuming it had been plowed before the prior snow, it could not have had more than 3 inches.

Well, upon touchdown, I discovered that under the snow was GLAZE ICE! I had ZERO braking action (didn't even apply them) and ZERO directional control, which is why I didn't hit the binders.

What saved my bacon was that I was flying a twin Cessna (310)and was able to keep the nose pointed down the runway by the use of differential power while at the same time, increasing power to take off levels.

Soon, I was airborne again, thank #####, at which time I had a frank exchange of views with the unicom operator (who worked for the municipality that ran the airport) suggesting that he get the field closed or plowed and salted before somebody got killed.

I must have been the first arrival of the morning but still, the field operator has an affirmative duty to insure the safety of the runway or close it...at least they have to give you a braking action report. Had someone just bothered to go set foot on the runway, let alone run a car or truck down it like they are supposed to, they would have known there was ice under the snow.

So for me, the slide was no fun at all! (:

    Just thought I'd share.
    (:

Just to respond to a comment in your initial post - there IS a file to change inland lakes and rivers to ice for winter. Sorry, you'll have to search for it. I have it, but I'm at work and don't remember the name. I just copy the ice files to texture folder, then copy water back in the spring! The author supplied the defaults in a folder...sorry to stray..:7
