    Default Windows service pack 2

Just had windows service pack installed, actually a few weeks ago, and now my FS2002 locks up frequently.

It has on the odd occasion locked up when i have been using other programs, or the computer in general, but nowhere near as much as when i use FS2002.

I just tried then and had it lock up on me 5 times in a row. And in particular when i use it in conjuction with ActiveSky.

Obviously now that im on the net writing here not a problem at all.

Yet when i start up FS2002, bam, lock up!

    Think i'm getting pissed off?

    YEP!!!!!!!

Has anybody else had problems with service pack 2?

I would download and install updated motherboard controller chip drivers to see if it corrected the problem. After installing the drivers, run the directx diagnostic program. Press start, run..., type dxdiag, OK. Let it stabilize, ensure you are using DirectX9.0b or 9.0c (preferred). Select the Display tab, ensure Directdraw, Direct3D, and AGP accelerations are enabled. If any are grayed-out, reinstall the motherboard drivers. Run the directdraw and direct3d tests and note any errors.

You could try downloading and installing directx9.0c again, if the above doesn't correct the problem. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en

    Thanks for your reply.

Although a lot of what you said was gobblededook to me.

    Computer gumby you see.

However the option i did understand was to download directx9.0c again, so i might have to give that a go, even though it will take me an hour and a half to download it. But hey, if it fixes it....

I will tell you one thing though.

I looked in my program files folder, looked in a folder called "directx" and it has another folder called "setup" which has absolutely nothing in it.

    Bad??????

Did you update this computer's Windows to WinXP? If so, the \program files\directx folder may be a hold over from the earlier OS. I have that on my Win98 with the following:

    C:\Program Files\DirectX\Setup\DxDiag (Shortcut).

I don't have that folder in WinXP. Since it only a shortcut to the directx diagnostic, it wouldn't be of any concern. When you run the diagnostic, look at the DirctX Files tab and see if it notes any problems.

Nope, when i bought the computer it came with XP.

Ran the diagnostic, checked thru all tabs and no problems found.

Directdraw, Direct3D, and AGP accelerations are enabled and ran the directdraw and direct3d tests with no errors.

It says i have Directx 9.0c installed, would it be worth downloading and reinstalling or do you think its just a case of Servicepack 2 not being capatible?

This only started happening when i took the computer down to the local computer shop with an unrelated problem, they decided to update to servicepack 2 for me.

Since then, sometimes i can fly without a problem, sometimes it just continually freezes on me.

One last thing. Would it be worth reinstalling FS2002?

    Ok, new update.

I have Links 2003 and its starting to do the same with that.

When i use the computer in general, playing solitaire, using Mic.Word, using the internet no problems yet it seems to be doing it with games.

I get the feeling its a servicepack 2 problem.

Games Are by far, more demanding on your computer, than when just using general tasks.

Nope, not SP2 causing your lock-ups....look elsewhere.

What are your systems specs.? ......How much ram do you have?.....Have you done any maintenance on you computer lately?

I would try installing updated motherboard controller chips drivers, i.e., Intel, VIA, SiS, AMD, ALi, NForce. Next download the directx9.0c install program and reinstall directx9.0c. At this point try the flight simulator. If the problem remains, rename fs2002.cfg to fs2002.OLD, restart the flight simulator and see if the problem occurs. If so, delete the new fs2002.cfg, then rename fs2002.OLD to fs2002.cfg.

Did the computer shop install new RAM? If so, try removing any new sticks of RAM and see if the problem corrects itself.

Thank you for all your efforts gents.

    System specs as follows:

    AMD Duron MMX 1.3ghz
    384mg ram
    Directx9.0c
    Geforce4 mmx 440

The games were running very nicely with those specs up to the point where i took it into the comp shop so i am convinced that it is something they did when it was in there.

I have done maintenance, or more to the point, the computer shop did the maintenance and its after i got it back that all this locking up started to occur.

Yep, i did have more ram put in but that was a few months ago and everything was running beautifully before i took it into the comp shop for its latest fix.

However the details of what they did are back at home. I fly back Tuesday morning Perth time (gmt+8) so i will have to pull the paperwork out and check to see what they did.

I will attempt your fixes then and let you know how i went.

Once again thanks for your help, its appreciated.

p.s. Ahh William, i see your from Orlando. Would you believe i first decided to seek help from this forum when i was conducting a flight from JFK to Orlando (KMCO), on an ILS approach (Delta 767) 4 mile final and bang, IT FROZE???!!!

Picture it. Grown man standing, face as red as a tomato, fists clenched, sphincter puckered up, using some rather colorful language.
Then 6 yr old son who witnessed this tirade states, " but dad, computers dont have a head for you to Fu$%*ing knock off!!!"

How many times do you promise yourself not to swear in front of the kids, or behave an age less than your son, especially when Captain Kitchen is around?!

Have had virtually the same problem, only I installed the latest nvidia driver for my mx440 as well as SP2. My solution was to open the Device Manager, double click mx440, select driver then select update driver, Problem now corrected.
If you are unsure where to find Device Manager, open control panel\ system\hardware\device manager.
    Hope this helps, arthurplum.

    Hi guys.

Have been researching the problem since i flew back in and i am utterley astounded as to how many people are having problems,in particular those who run AMD processors and GE force cards. It is WIDESPREAD!!!

In fact i even found an article where Microsoft ADMITS a problem. I quote, "The problem applies to DirectX programs running under Windows XP on AMD platforms".

    Nice huh?!

And the thing is, the same fix doesn't necessarily work for everone.
People are trying are whole variety of things to fix the problem which is working for them, but not necessarily for another with exactly the same problem.

Oh boy this is going to be painful, i can see it.

I still cant believe that Microsoft one though.
