Missing file to read

On some downloads, I can't read the documents because I get a notice saying, "unable to locate file.. winword.exe "

Do we all have to Have the "Word" program to read these documents?

No word is a part of the Microsoft Office - and its payware.

But you can open the .doc files with notepad instead and they will be readable.

It will not look nice, but you will be able to read it anyway. You will also see a lot of wierd signs :D

I tried to open it in wordpad, can you give me a step by step, procedure?

I highlight the file then press "SHIFT+F10" to bring up the menu and you can choose "Open with.."
Select Wordpad or Notepad in the list.
