Thread: New Flight Sim Computer

  1. Default New Flight Sim Computer

I am looking to upgrade my old P4 2.2 GHz GeForce 4600 system to run the new FS2004 coming out shortly.

I am definately looking at the 800 Mz fsb mother boards but now that the P5 3.2 (Prescott)

plus MHz systems are about to be released (maybe), I do not know whether to hold off. That is will the 800 MHz fsb mother boards on the P4s work with a P5 chip?

Anyone out there been reading up on these newer generation of processors?

Prescott will not be called the Pentium 5. It is not an all new design. It is simply another revision of the P4.

It will be built on Intel's new 90nm (.09 micron) fab. It will run at 800 Mhz FSB initially and may scale even higher. Intel expects the chip to top out at around 5 Ghz.

Last I heard, Canterwood/Springdale boards would be compatible with Prescotts after a BIOS flash which would be made available after the chip's fall release.

    Can anyone else add anything?

I dont know anything about the BIOS update, but the new chips will be sold in a socket 478 setup, just like the P4s are right now. That will be just the first few chips, and Intel will change to LGA 775. Go to http://www6.tomshardware.com/cpu/20030623/index.html if you want some more information. Although the article is a shoot out between the 3.2 ghz P4 and the 3200 XP+, the first part is about the new P5 that will be released. Unless you really dont have much of a budget, I would consider going with the 3 ghz rather than the 3.2 ghz model. Going with the quickest Intel chip usually means that you will be paying a premium over the next quickest, and I dont think there will even be that big of a performance difference either. Otherwise, if price is no concern, I would go with the 3.2 ghz chip.

Just a little note about buying a 3ghz rather than the 3.2ghz. I agree totally BUT I recently upgraded to a P4 2.8ghz 800mhz fsb mounted to a ASUS P4P800 Deluxe mobo. I've clocked her to just a tad under 3.2ghz on the original fan.... running cool and super stable ;-)

I'm very happy with the purchase's, and I saved myself £270 ($448) by staying away from the 3.2ghz... not bad, hehe.

Hmmm, so it will be called the P5 then. For months, everyone has maintained that Prescott would not be dubbed the Pentium 5. Must be a last minute marketing move since to call it the P4 would sound kind of old and outdated against the new Athlon 64.

    $600?

thats rediculess, I'd rather stick with an AMD Athlon 2800+ for $150 and overclock it to 3200+, hmmm so easy :D

    Thanks everyone for the input.

I still do not know which way to go now that we will have "Two" different types of sockets. Go with the current 478 design and have "Limited" upgradeability (except for a new mother board) or wait till that new socket is released.
