DC-9 and INS, true or false?

Having discovered the wonderful [link:www.simufly.com/ins|Delta Carousel INS] made by Gianfranco Corrias and Marco Ravanello, I now use this every flight on for example the [link:www.panelshop.com|RFP 747 classic.]

I tried yesterday to install a single INS to Iron Knuckles DC-9. no problems at all! flew perfectly!

Now I have a triple INS installation as well..

So, the installation is a breeze, but is it real??

What I don't know is whether the DC-9 had INS installed at any time. single, dual or triple? any photos showing this, and most important; where on the panel where they located?

Such installations would have been quite optional, and I suspect that the majority of DC-9s did NOT have them, as they really were not necessary for the shorter routes with ample VOR coverage that DC-9's fly/flew. Having them would be a very costly option (you need more than one)that really would not reap much for the airline.

My friend flies DC-9s for NWA, and there's no INS on theirs. UAL had no INS on their 727s.

I'm sure that today there are some DC-9s upgraded with some form of modern navigation (IRS, GPS), but I don't think too many DC-9s rolled out of the plant with INS in them.

Now, the intercontinental airliners of that era? That's a different story.

In the end, if you like having it / using it in your DC-9, you really are not off the reality track. Have fun with it. :-)
