Thread: AI Altitude

    Default AI Altitude

Some of my AI aircraft are always way too high to land and just don't bother making the approach. I watched one of them about 30 miles from the airport at about 10000ft and it didn't bother descending to land......then it did decide to descend, but by this time was too late and it flew over the airport at about 2000ft.....anyone else had this and knows how to cure it or what the cause is?
    Thanks

I've noticed that as well :( It could be the AI plane's flight dynamics? :-hmmm

    Hey there Paul,

You can go get updated .AIR files for PAI planes from there website, provided you are talking about PAI planes. This does fix a lot of the "queretrons" for them.

Also, is this EVERY airport, or just some that you have noticed? Because a fix for that may be to go into the AFCAD file for that airport and make sure that your ILS is okay. Also, the altitude for the airport in your TTool Airport Text file may be off as well. This has caused "floating" planes before at some airports because the altitude was set too high.

I use a website www.ar-group.com/icaoiata.htm to verify the airport info when I upload airports. See if all that is in line. I hope that this helps out some. Good luck.

I've noticed this too and have found that I was picking up the AI, in chase mode, too close to the a/p. If I picked up the AI about 15-20 mins from landing it was better - you can, of course accelerate the time to 2 or 4X if you're in a hurry to see the AI land.

I don't think its the flight dynamics at all, i've seen that happen a lot when I have ATC controlling 100 aircraft instead of the usual 30.

Some aircraft fail to descend on time because ATC never has enough time to get back to them due to so many aircraft in the area remember you have ATC controlling 100 aircraft in flight simulator and not all of them descend on time, so they usually just do a fly over and go around until they manage to land when it happens they tend to land on the wrong side of the rwy...the funny thing is that ATc clears them to land and them by the time they get to the ground ATC tells them they weren't cleared to land...really stupid if you ask me.

I think the problem boils down to altitude. (There was a similar thread a year or so ago about this subject).

It was observed that aircraft programmed to fly at higher altitudes had a difficult time making the descent for the approach. Someone (with more time than me) determined this altitude changed from aircraft to aircraft and generated a list of maximum altitude programmed for each aircraft type.

I’ve observed two actions from AI aircraft.
    1. They never speak to approach or try to make the descent. They keep flying at altitude (looks lie about 10,000’) down the centerline of the runway and just keep going.
    2. They attempt to make the approach but can’t get down in time. These aircraft declare themselves at 6 miles, get cleared for final etc but declare missed approach. If you see them make a turn a few miles past departure end, they’ll come back for another try from the “radar pattern”.

    Hope this helped.

I noticed a similar problem the other day. But I think it happened soon after I started the flight. A BA 747 came in at 10,000 and flew down the center line all dirtied up @ 200kts and then just cleaned up and flew straight off. Another 757 followed it exactly. Then 10 mins later, a 737 and dash8 came in properly. I probably guess it was the ai engine not being able to deal with the amount of AI since I always fly with 100% or the ai engine started with those flightplans at too high an altitude and they just couldn't come down in time. It only happened soon after starting a flight anyway.
