Default Awesome canyon high in the Andes

I was on a flight from La Paz to Lima Peru in my favorite aircraft (737) at 30,000 feet. Right over the Andes and I noticed some interesting textures in the mountains far below. I went down and had a look and found an awesome canyon, which I believe is the headwaters of the Amazon River. It was big enough to squeeze my 747-400 through. At the east end there is even a waterfall. Has any one else found this, if not take a look. Here are the co-ordinates S. 12,17.73 W.74,11.60 around 7700 feet.

    Hi Rose,

Thanks for the tip - it is an interestng area. If this is the waterfall you are referring to, I wonder if it is not "real" but an artifact due to the way MS renders water (flat and level!) This is not as large a problem for lakes as it is for long rivers, where the elevation may change quite a bit along the way. This is how adjustments are made, in steps. While not obvious in these highly compressed images, the high resolution mesh does not suggest a dramatic drop in elevation at that location.

The area is even more dramatic when using mesh constructed from 3arcsec shuttle data.
