Default Anyone running dual processors?

I'm thinking about buying a HP XW8000. It runs dual Xeon processors with a choice of professional graphics cards. Any comments or suggestions would be helpful!

Thanks-

G.

The question is, will it run with FS???
Doubt it, I've never heard of anyone using a Zeon with Windows and FS...

However, if anyone knows more, they're welcome to step in!

Windows XP Pro supports dual processors.

Dual CPU's won't necessarily give you higher FPS. What they will allow you to do is run multiple programs at once and still maintain top speed. With this increased multitasking capability comes the necessity for more RAM, since what use is being able to run multiple programs at top speed if you haven't got the RAM to hold it all?

Xeons are just Pentium 4's with more cache and enabled for multiprocessor configurations. If you're seriously considering a dual processor system, you might also want to check out the Opteron offerings.

I don't see any reason that FS wouldn't work with dual processors. I mean it's the same configuration in XP Pro, just one processor would be 100% devoted to FS while the other would handle background processing. The bigger question that I have is will FS run well on professional graphics cards, Open GL systems with multiple outputs? This is getting pretty technical...way over my head at least!

Thanks, G.

LAST EDITED ON May-30-03 AT 05:47PM (EDT)[p]I'm running a fake dual CPU system. I'm using a 3.06 ghz P4 with HT enabled. It does a great job at tricking Windows into thinking that it has 2 CPUs installed. Xeons will work just fine, although you are correct, you arent going to see any advantage in FPS. I would expect to see a nice gain in performance with FS2004 since it will be multithreaded in comparison to a single CPU or non HT system. I am assuming that you will be using your system for a bit more that just playing Flight Simulator. Its too bad that Windows doesnt support the ability to combine multiple CPUs into acting as one. That would kick #####.

All my machines are the CPQ EVO W6000 here at the house. They are Dual Xeon 2.4's.

The wifes machine is running XPP and my machine's are running 2003 Enterprise, they are AD Domain Controllers and SQL,WEB,FTP and Exchange2K and E2K3.

The only problem I have is that I can't use hardware excelleration because NOONE has drivers for 03 yet.

The Vidcard that came with them is a Matrox G450 dualhead, but I put in a Radeon 7500. I am thinging of installing FS on the wifes cpu when she turns her back so I can see if the Matrox card is acceptable when running XPPro.

Maybe I will get off my ##### and do the dual monitor setup as well.

Oh yea, each machine had 1GB RAM and I am running Ultimate Traffic with AI set at 100% and the processor utilization is showing about 45-68% for BOTH processors, and doing SOFTWARE Rendering, since I don't have a hardware driver for 2003.

Hope this all makes sense.

if you want to pay for dual cpus just to try and increase performance in fs2002 your wasting your time and money really,

as mentioned above you will need to run 2k pro or xp pro, as 98/me/xp home/ etc don't have the 2+ cpu kernel.
you may see increased windows performance but the game itself most likely won't budge

your better off getting a new systemboard and cpu (like the p4 with 800mhz bus) and some good high end ram and good video card (like radion 9800 or new nvidias that are comming out) that would most likely increase game performance way more than going duel xeons (there not exactly cheap)

if your running ALOT of windows applications at the same time as you play the game (I meen way more than just messenger, IE, and outlook) for example this is a server that gets alot of web hits as well as a workgroup exchange server than ya going dual cpu will help you.

hope this helps

if you have the money to just throw on to a super dual cpu system than go nuts and try it but I think its a waste.

Luc,

LAST EDITED ON Jun-08-03 AT 09:11PM (EDT)[p]Just one quick thing to add... This is directly from Microsofts Knowledge Base regarding Windows XP Home Edition and Hyperthreading...

Both Windows XP Home Edition and Windows XP Professional treat a Hyper-Threading enabled computer as a multiple processor computer. You can verify this by looking in Device Manager, under the Computer and Processors nodes:
In Computer, you can expect the computer to be described as a multiprocessor PC.

Also, directly from Intel's website regarding the HT processor...

Operating Systems that Include Optimizations for Hyper-Threading Technology

Note: Information on Hyper-Threading Technology † for Intel® Xeon™ processors is available here.

Microsoft* Windows* Operating System Desktop Based PCs
The following desktop operating systems include optimizations for HT Technology and are currently eligible to carry the new Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor with HT Technology logo:
Microsoft* Windows* XP Professional Edition
Microsoft* Windows* XP Home Edition

Just a bit of info for those using XP Home (like myself) and an HT compatible Processor and Mobo.
