Thread: How do you open ports?

  1. Default How do you open ports?

I know this seems like a simple question but it is something I have struggled to figure out. I have checked all the help and troubleshooting materials and can't find a thing about it except what to do if you get error messages. Thanks!

  2. Default RE: How do you open ports?

By the way...I have a router and Windows XP. Thanks again!

    Hi Captain,

Could you describe what it is you're trying to achieve?

The problem with forcing ports open is one of security more than anything else, depending on the port and the nature of the traffic through it.

If you know which port you want to open and can't, you might try examining your XP firewall and see if it's running. Whilst very good, XP's firewall offers nothing in the way of a GUI to allow selected traffic through and may well be blocking your attempts to create some.

LAST EDITED ON May-26-03 AT 05:59AM (EDT)[p]If you want to allocate(or open/close) ports on the router you can do it in the router setup.(In the menu for the software you have to find"advanced internet configuration"or similar)But be warned that it isn't always easy, depends on your router.I had terrible trouble with my router,in the end I gave up,and here's my advice, gained from my experience: Disable the firewall in your router(set it to DMZ,DeMilitarizedZone)disable the XP firewall(which is useless anyway)and then install ZoneAlarm. Then you can configure, authorize or block ports just how you want them.Everytime traffic passes through your router, whether it's incoming or outgoing,ZoneAlarm gives you a warning, and you can decide whether to allow it or not, either temporarily or permanently.Be aware that while ZA has a free version,it is NOT network capable,if you have more than one computer you have to buy the Pro version, but it's well worth the money.Btw,if you have both the hardware firewall in your router,AND the XP firewall enabled,it's possible(and indeed probable) that they are conflicting with another. If that's the case, you could try disabling the XP firewall and then try again.Otherwise, see above.Hope this helps,
