OT - Some Advice Needed

Later this week I hope to take delivery of my new computer (P4 Canterwood, 3.00ghz with a Radeon 9800 Pro). This is the first time that I will have had two PC's at home as my wife and son have got fed up with me hogging the current machine!!! I would like to network the two machines (both have, or will have, ethernet cards in them) but I have no idea what I else need. I have a cable modem and would like to be able to share this between the two machines as well as sharing the printer and being able to transfer data and play games between the two.

I know (or at least think) I will need a network hub and a cable router. Can you get something that will do the job of a separate hub & router? Do I also need a printer server? What else have I missed??????????????

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

All you need now is a router. I have the same setup in my home with a Linksys 4-port router. It was very, very, very easy to setup and also allows us to expand the network in the future. A real simple description of the setup you will need: The NIC card in each computer connects through RJ45/CAT 5 cable to the router. The router connects to the cable modem and WALLAH! If you are running Windows XP, the computers will pretty much set themselves up on the network as soon as you plug them in, if not, it may take you 5 minutes to get them up and running together. There are quite a few good sites on the web that explain how to setup the computer's software for networking. Good luck and have fun with it!

I certainly agree with the above. Whether you use Linksys, Netgear, or another brand, I recommend you use the external router vice WinXP internal Internet Connection Sharing software.

have you bought privately or from a large shop company and hope you don't mind me asking how much did the whole stytem cost.

i'm doing some costings of my own at this time so thats why I ask
