The first time I held for what seemed like a half hour (3000 ft). The other time I flew 1 complete hold and failed, it sucks that when you fail they don't tell you why? Is there any enlightening advice or links that I could read about passing that part? Flying the ILS after reaching Nalla seems like it'd be easy, if I could ever get cleared to that point.

I attempted the Instrument test about half way through my real life IR training. I didn't try any of the lessons. I just wanted to see if I used standard real world methods, if it would pass me. I passed. That was about 8 months ago so I don't remember the details. However, here are some tips for the hold.

Remember, that if they say hold on a particular radial, it means that you will be flying the reciprocal heading on the inbound leg. That is, if you are instructed to hold on the 140 radial, you will be on heading 320 when flying toward the VOR.

If I remember correctly, you have to make either a parallel or tear-drop entry for the hold. Review those procedures as that is probably what you are doing wrong. You'll need to fly over the VOR, head outbound for 1 minute and then make a ~180° turn (actually more than 180) and head back toward the VOR on the 140 radial/320 bearing.
