You can do it in Photoshop, but I use Paint Shop Pro.

GIMP for windows

I have photoshop but shelved it because of the more advanced and user friendly features in GIMP
Yup, I use Photoshop. I've used Paintshop Pro in the past and I thought it was like the illegitimate offspring of Photoshop and MS Paint (I thought it sucked, basically). I've used GIMP in the past and I thought it was pretty much like photoshop (as it should be, it's designed directly from photoshop) but I didn't find any advantage with it.

Yes many painters use Paint Shop Pro And many use PhotoShop, that is about $90.00 verses $500.00 but don’t be discouraged about the prices you can paint aircraft with just about any image editing software some are just easier to work with then others and some have features that others don’t.
You sound as if you want to give it a try. If money isn’t a problem go for the top two named above, but if you just want to give it a try and money is a problem then try one of the many free ones that can be found on the net but I would suggest one that can work with layers.
Try google.com and search using “Free Image Editing” and you will find many to try, and for tutorials search using “Painting Tutorials FS2002”
