Thread: Porpoising aircraft

    Default Porpoising aircraft

    Hello all;
    1.) How do I solve the problem of "porpoising" (incessant up and down pitching), that seems to infect most of the aircraft I have downloaded from the Internet. Of course heavy dependence on the autopilot is a solution for some pilots, but the hallmark of a well balanced aircraft is that it can be trimmed up for climb, cruise, or descent and, once trimmed, will maintain the desired attitude with the pilot's "hands off".

    2.) Can anyone recommend a twin turboprop with accurate flight dynamics, one that I can trim up and fly by hand? Thanx for any and all help.

    Since you mention "most" aircraft downloaded from the internet, then I wonder if this "porpoising" is pilot induced. I've had several people try my system who are up & down all over the place for awhile. It's true that the flight dynamics of various simulated aircraft tend to be more unstable than others, but I'd say that many of my downloaded aircraft are at least controllable without excessive pitching.

    So how are the defaults, or payware? Controlled climbs and descents with steady climb/descent rates & airspeed is something learned over time. I personally learned the process from radio control & pilot training. It's transferred to the simulation, so that I can make steady non-porpoising climbs from within the cockpit or outside in spot view. And BTW ---- a real aircraft won't maintain altitude "hands off" either, just by trimming. It always requires a bit of attention or A/P.

    Look over the lines below carefully and change with trial/error. It may either be the "Pitot Static"-the verticle speed time or the "Pitch Stability" in the flight tuning. This one has been changed from 1.000 to 10.000 I had a really bad problem with that with my B737-800.

    [flight_tuning]
    cruise_lift_scalar=1.000
    pitch_stability=10.000
    roll_stability=1.000
    yaw_stability=1.000
    parasite_drag_scalar=1.000
    induced_drag_scalar=1.000
    elevator_effectiveness=1.000
    aileron_effectiveness=1.000
    rudder_effectiveness=1.000
    elevator_trim_effectiveness=1.000
    aileron_trim_effectiveness=1.000
    rudder_trim_effectiveness=1.000

    [pitot_static]
    vertical_speed_time_constant = 1 //Increasing this value will cause a more instantaneous reaction in the VSI

    Just remember to write down your previous settings so if it does not work you can always revert back.

    Try NAMC YS-11 from: alliedfsgroup.com

    It´s not an aircraft for beginners certainly, but it´s one of the best you can get.

    I hope you´ll enjoy with it.

    Happy landings,

    is that for having your aircraft fly as ai?

    Thank you, Ladamson, for your helpful comments on my porpoising aircraft problem. Alhough I have --in the past-- downloaded aircraft that have flown from "pretty good" to "beautifully" for the most part finding well balanced aircraft on the internet has been hit or miss for me, with lots more misses than hits.

    A point to ponder -- I've noticed that a majority of the planes availble for download on the Internet's sim sites are actually just repaints of some fewer number of basic aircraft designs. If the flight dynamics of an original design were "bad", then all the repainted "offspring" of that original design would inherit their "father's" bad characteristics. I certainly don't mean to disparrage our good and cool aircraft designers but I've been trying to account for the high number of unstable designs I've come across on download.

    Thanks Delta;
    This is the kind of stuff I was looking for -a definite group of parameters and scalars to experiment with out of the dozens of possible categories in a typical flight dynamics editor. Although I'm just returning to flight simming after a long hiatus, I have used Abacus's Flight Dynamics Editor in the past, so I recognized the format immediately. I'll start playing with this immediately! Thanks again.

    Judesman:
    Thanks for your response. I have had a hell of a time finding
    flight sim aircraft to download which don't "porpoise" up and down in regular flight. No I didn't want the aircraft to "fly-
    as AI. Just by my own hand and "I".

    just a thought on the porpoising....i suddenly developed this with my aircraft..turned out to be having 2 joysticks connected at the same time to 2 different ports.

    Thanks, Jose, for the reccomendation. I'll surely try it.
