Thread: aircraft.cfg ??

1. Default aircraft.cfg ??

Some questions about the aircraft.cfg file.

Under [pitot_static] it reads:
vertical_speed_time_constant=1.0

As to the entry =1.0, I have reviewed most of my "fleet" and the number varies from =0.8 to =999
Most planes [I have about 60 in FS2K2] are =1.0 or =10.0.
I have played around with various numbers, however I don't notice much change,if any, when I change the number.

Exactly, just what does this number change.

I have several aircraft that have a problem holding an altitude on AP ALT HOLD. Nose just pitches up and down trying to lock on the altitude. [not all planes]

I have a lot of experience with FS2k2 and I also am a real world pilot. So I understand flight dynamics.

I am just not sure what and how the {pitot_static] is trying to correct.

Anybody out there got an answer to this ?????????

Hi there,

it basically makes the "feed" from the pitot tube more or less of sensitive in the autopilot behaviour.
Since you are a pilot I don't have to tell you that the pitot is connected to you airspeed indicator.
If the airspeed fluctuates a lot the autopilot will work overtime. If you handfly you won't notice much
unless you really look hard at you're AI.
Of course I could be wrong, it happened before...once ;-)

Hi Ray,

The Autopilot in 2002 flys (controls) the A/C with inputs of trim, in the various control surfaces. So when the A/P senses the A/C is losing altitude, it begins to apply UP TRIM to compansate.....The line your asking about controls how FAST the A/P adds Trim.....1.0 being default, 1.5= 1 1/2 times as fast, 2.0 being twice as fast.....Just like if you where adding up trim with your keyboard, the faster you repeating-ly pressed the key, the faster the A/C would respond.

For your A/C that are porpoising:

Change your vertical_speed_time_constant=9.0

Change your elevator_trim_effectiveness=1.2

Change your pitch_stability=1.5

You can increase any of the examples above, but do ALL THREE, instead of trying to correct it with one BIG change.

Have Fun,

Randy: Thanks. Very helpful. I have fooled around with these numbers before. Mostly guess work. Your input give me better direction . thanks again.

LAST EDITED ON Apr-27-03 AT 02:05AM (EDT)[p]About the elevator_trim_effectiveness; I have found that entry usefull in editing the sensitivity of pitch trim input. The lower the number(ex:like going from 1.0 to 0.75) the more input required, which means smaller adjustments are made possible. But use decimals, not negatives.

Hi KC,

Good Tip for Hand Flying, .........but not AutoPilot.

You could probably get the same desired effect, by editing (Decreasing) the Aircraft cfg. file under: The {KEYBOARD RESPONSE} Section?
