Thread: MAYDAY, MAYDAY, MAYDAY THE COMPUTER IS DEAD!

1. Default MAYDAY, MAYDAY, MAYDAY THE COMPUTER IS DEAD!

Ok, here is my whole horrific tale:
on Sunday, I tried installing a Logitech Wingman Extreme gameport joystick which I had borrowed from some friends.
Everything goes smoothly until the installation tells me to restart the PC. I restart it and the installation tells me to connect the joystick to the computer. Fine, I do this and click on "Next". The computer freezes. I reboot and everything seems to be allright, but it freezes again. Strange, I think, this has never happened before. I reboot again and it freezes yet again. I reboot a few more times and it freezes a few more times. Well, you get the general picture.
I try taking the installation CD-ROM out and disconnecting the joystick but it still doesn't work. i decided along with my dad that we should try to reinstall Windows 98. We do and it still doesn't work. We've started to panic now. We get a message saying:
"VFAT Device Initialisation Failed:
A device or resource required by VFAT is not present or is unavailable. VFAT cannot continue loading.
System halted."
I know that VFAT has something to do with the file system but what does this message mean?
I is now impossible for us to turn the PC on let alone use it. This is an emergency people! I need to use FS soon.
Does this happen with all wingman extreme joysticks?
Here is my basic system specs:
AMD Athlon 1200 Mhz CPU
512 MB RAM
ATI Rage Fury/Xpert 2000 Pro 32 MB video card
There's more but I can't remember right now.
Can anyone help me? It would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance!
Matti

Try to start in safe mode and remove the joystick device.

My guess would be - format. Recreate file system (partition).
Why is that, always when I hear word "problem", the system specs are ATHLON :)

Cause you're biased toward Intel.

I like being me.

I've run AMD and Intel over the years and had great results with both, and got great deals on both.

As far as I'm concerned they're both good companies with good products, and they trade off every so often as "king"...

I had that same problem with the Logitech when I had windows 98, The software would make it freeze on startup. So I went into safe mode, removed the program, and Then it worked.
IF that doesnt work, try using the drivers from their website.

He doesn't have a problem with device, rather file system - VFAT. I'd suggest re-partitioning.

If you'd search the archives a little more, you'd find that multiple systems with loads of different software and hardware have different problems. In the future, why don't you do a little research before stating your own clearly biased and faulty generalizations?

Otherwise, try to boot from the Win98 CD. If you can, get into Safe Mode and uninstall the stick's drivers. If that works, great. If that fails, then yes, reformat and reinstall.

LAST EDITED ON Apr-23-03 AT 04:25AM (EDT)[p]While Win98 is booting hold the 'strg' key. The system will offer you a list of boot modes you can choose. If this doesn't work, try holding the F8 key.....i can't remember exactly which one it was.... :-shy
