Thread: Help for the "blurries" ?

    Default Help for the "blurries" ?

    In the FS2002 config file, I changed "terrain_extended_levels" from 1 to 4 and left everything else alone. I'm not sure what it did, but it appears to have made the scenery clearer and to have cut down on the "catch up". Perhaps some one can tell me what's happening. I picked up the hint from Flight Sim Gateway. Is there a feature here which discusses improving graphics?

    try a search of the term "blurries" here and at avsim. You'll get a wealth of information...

    To narrow it down even further, search the MSFS forum at avsim.com for a user called PaulL01 (Paul Leatzaw). He has published the definitive set of .cfg file tweaks. AVSIM has a new forum system which apparently won't let a direct link in but here's the URL of the article over there if you can figure out how to directly access it:

    Thank you both very much. A real education. And now, no more blurries!

    I do not understand the constyant reference to these 'blurries' ??? what 'blurries ??.. I have never suffered any such problem. If you find you are suffering from a lack of image quality, then turn the sliders down, or get a faster cpu.. all the tweaks being bandied about are pure 'snake oil'... the real world is not crystal clear, fs does a great representation as it stands, unmodified....

    Some even run loads of filtering (smoothing) and then try to resharpen by 'snake oil' tweaks and urban myths :-lol

    If your system is setup correctly, is un'tweaked', and fast enough, its fine...

    Hmm...

    I get blurries in certain areas only, but decreasing my sliders only INCREASES the blurries.

    Funny thing though, I can fly supersonic in mountainous areas with dense aftermarket terrain meshes installed without any blurries - but if I fly over a flat city it's blurries galore.

    Something about my system (and my last system too) doesn't seem to like those city textures.

    Hi Carl,

    Check out the thread still on this page entitled:
    "Riva Tuner settings: anyone want to share?"

    As an interesting aside I noted the other day that the LOD and Anisotropy tweaks work on the GeForce 256 DDR with the 12.90 WHQL drivers. My neighbour called me round as he, like many of us, was frustrated by the blurries and consequently was using the sim less and less. It's all too easy to forget what the out-of-the-box visuals looked like but what I saw reminded me all too well how awful the sim can appear.

    I wasn't sure whether RivaTuner would do the job with his card but neither of us was disappointed with the results. He has a humble AMD 700MHz with the GeForce 256 DDR and coupled with lowering the LOD from 0 to -0.1 the transformation was astounding! Admittedly you can only force level 2 Anisotropy but even that was VERY worth while. He was delighted and I went away well chuffed I had been able to renew his enthusiasm for the sim.

    In FS2002.cfg I suggest you try adjusting the last three lines of the TERRAIN section:

    TERRAIN_ERROR_FACTOR=4.800000
    TERRAIN_MAX_VERTEX_LEVEL=19
    TERRAIN_TEXTURE_SIZE_EXP=8
    TERRAIN_AUTOGEN_DENSITY=2
    TERRAIN_USE_GRADIENT_MAP=1
    TERRAIN_EXTENDED_TEXTURES=1
    TERRAIN_DEFAULT_RADIUS=5.500000
    TERRAIN_EXTENDED_RADIUS=8.000000
    TERRAIN_EXTENDED_LEVELS=3

    I take no credit for these settings. I followed Paul's (PaulL01) advice some time ago - it saved a lot of experimenting! Paul has done a great deal of very careful work on this issue and I am sure other's will agree we all owe him a great debt of thanks.

    Please note: Don't try to combine the LOD settings as tweaked by RivaTuner (downloadable at www.guru3d.com) with the 'Best Quality' setting through Windows Display Properties. The latter will just set the LOD back to 0 (zero)!

    Tip: If you want to enhance your experience further I suggest a visit to FScene and get hold of Ruud Faber's replacement ground textures for Europe and USA+Canada. You do have to pay for them but you won't regret the outlay, I can assure you. They are a visual feast for all us VFR fliers.

    http://www.home.quicknet.nl/qn/prive/rfaber/

    Ruud has clearly put in a remarkable effort and richly deserves the recognition. His textures combined with the appropriate LandClass files make a world of difference to the realism of the sim. I have never been so enthusiastic about anything since Lennart Arvidsson's superb replacement ground textures for FS2000. Lennart, however, provided his work to the community free of charge and I am sure his name will also remain forever in the flight simming halls of fame.

    I changed the last 3 lines in the TERRAIN section as suggested in Tinfish's post, except I changed levels to 4. Two things happened. First, depth of field seems to have improved. Images are now post card clear all the way to the horizon. Second, the scenery refresh seems to take place much further away, In short, everthing seems in focus, and there is much less sectional differentiation resulting from the refresh. I would like to hear from someone else who has tried this suggestion. BTW, where is the LOD field in RivaTuner?

    I somehow got rid of my blurries when I turned off mult-texturing when airborne above 2000 feet. I still had blurries but then I decided to turn on AA through the FS display window and I have not had a blurry since. Kind of weird because I would not think AA would have anything to do with it.
