Thread: Serious Radeon 9700 problem

Default Serious Radeon 9700 problem

My brandnew, one-week old Radeon 9700 has a big problem in FS2002 and 3dMark2001SE.

After a few minutes in FS2002 or in the benchmark of 3dMark, the screen starts building up anomalies: repeating squares made up out of bright colors, where ground, water or a building is supposed to be.

It looks like this:

A while later the screen is totally corrupted. This is the result after a few minutes of simming.

Returning to windows doesn't help: the Win desktop is corrupted too. Reboot is the only solution.

I have tried EVERYTHING: new drivers, putting all sliders both ways (in FS2002 and in the driver), installing DX 9.0a, the lot. Nothing helps.

ANYONE PLEASE??

Albert,
That looks like maybe heat problem. Are you overclocking?

Albert,
You have tried most everything I can think of to fix the situation. It appears as if it is suffering greatly from heat buildup. Maybe the HSF unit isn't attached correctly? If it is brand new, I would probably take it back and get a replacement card. It is possible you have just got a lemon....with the thousands and thousands they make, it is bound to happen once in a while. If you are sure that it is firmly seated in it's AGP slot and you have checked the BIOS settings to ensure compatability, I would simply get a different one.
Good Luck,
Mike

I believe the other posters are correct on this one. What you've indicated has all the symptoms of over heating.

I had a similar problem with my old Geforce2 MX 400 64mb card. I would verify the "lemon" idea posted earlier and possibly consider taking a look at the power coming (sufficient, clean, battery backup?) from the wall and whether or not you've got sufficient airflow in the tower.

Those are just some suggestions and I hope you get it figured out.

LAST EDITED ON Mar-30-03 AT 11:42AM (EST)[p]Remove your computer's sides. If you can, find a large room fan and set it up right next to your computer, blowing air into the case. Boot up and fly FS2002 for awhile that way and see if it makes any difference. If it does, you've got an overheating problem and should check the heatsink and fan on the video card to see if they are installed properly. If the problem still occurs, check to see if the card is properly seated in the AGP slot. Perhaps pop it out and then reinstall it. Reboot and see what happens If that fails and you're sure you've tried everything you can think of, you should return the card for a replacement Radeon 9700 Pro just to see if you did get a lemon like everyone else has suggested.

The 9700 does need to be connected to the power supply separately from the AGP port.

Make sure you have the lead connected to the main power supply, and double check the onbard fan is spinning once you boot up.

install the latest intel i845 mobo drivers Sir.

Also, check Albatron for a bios upgrade for the mobo.

Unlike the others here, I do NOT think it is heat related, also, go into bios and set defaults for all options.

I installed a dedicated fan for the video card and I have had no problems.

FS2002 wouldn't even work if the R9700 wasn't plugged in to external power, so I would think it is not the problem.

I definitely think it is either heat on the Radeon or heat and overstress of power supply.
