Thread: Download Speed Question

  1. Default Download Speed Question

I don't know why this happens, but I have a DSL line. Whenever I download anything from Avsim.com I get download speeds of about 130, or more, kb per second. On Flightsim.com, I never get more than 9 or 10 kb per second. I had thought it may have to do with the number of people on FLightsim.com at the same time I am on, but that speed is consistent no matter what time of day or night I am online.

Does anybody know why? I have not been able to figure out why one web site is so fast, and the other is so slow.

Clue: It's much faster with a paid-for membership, I hear.

Some servers are faster than others. You will find that most servers won't let you download at the speed your modem is capable of. Usually it will be far slower. Not much you can do about it though, as the problem is on their side.

It also depends on how many hops you have to take to get the their server...

Try this. Open an DOS window then type:

    tracert www.avsim.com

and see how many hops it is taking then do it again:

    tracert www.flightsim.com

and see how many hope are involved. You can also see the delay for the returns... You might be amazed at how many switches and servers it hits before it gets to the server you want...

Thanks for those tips. 13 hops to Avsim and 14 hops to Flightsim. It's interesting how you have to hop various servers, and it's not just a hop from your ISP's servers to the servers of the website you are trying to access. You have to go through all kinds of other parent servers and other servers that belong to your ISP to get there.

I guess one way to clear up the "mystery" is to ask if there is ANYONE out there getting high rates of download speed from Flightsim.com. Not that I'm complaining. Definitely no complaint here at all. I'm grateful as I can be for the existence of Flightsim.com. I want to make it clear that I only posed the question in the first place out of sheer curiosity.

In all honesty I don't notice. With a 1-meg broadband connection NOTHING downloads at the potential speed that is theoretically obtainable, but my flat fee means that I tend to just set the download, then continue surfing. It makes no difference to me whether it takes 21 seconds or 21 minutes.

I have noticed that Avsim is consistently faster than Flightsim, but then they are a larger commercial organisation with ties to several commercial developers, so it follows their downloads might be quicker - their developer partners probably demand it.

    Do not forget:

    1Byte=8 bites

Then, if your ASDL conection is 256 (Kilobites/sec), this means a maximum download speed of 32 Bytes/sec.

Your figures does not seems to be compatible.

I have been a paid member of Flightsim.com for about 3 years now and have usually been able to download at somewhere around 100KB/sec on Flightsim.com. Avsim is generally faster--usually in the 140KB/sec range.
