Thread: Video freeze & lock

  1. Default Video freeze & lock

    Captain_Slarty

Let me start with my system specs:
    System specs:
    Pent. 4 1.6
    Soyo SYP4 Dragon Ultra
    1024 PC 2100 DDR
GeForce Ti 4200 slightly overclocked 275/550
On Board CMI 8738 sound card
    Seagate 80 gig 7200RPM Harddrive

I updated my BIOS to the latest version, downloaded from Soyo site. I did not notice it at the time but it set my AGP Voltage to 1.8 instead of default 1.5 which is where it was before the update. It was like that for aprox 24 hours when I noticed it and reset it back to default (1.5). Now when I am on the internet and scrolling on something, my screen will momentairly freeze.Once in a while it will lock up and the only thing I can do is shut off the computer and restart it. I have reset the Ti 4200 back to default (250/513)I think this seems to help a little but it is hard to tell. It seems to operate OK in FS2002. Do you you have any suggestions I could try.The computer never did this before I updated the BIOS.

    Thank You

go back to the previous bios Sir.. if it was fine then.. and presuming nothing major is implemented in the new bios that you must have...

Just to add to the Capt'n comments. When you update BIOSs, you must make sure your CMOS memory has been cleared and new defaults set.

Some of the new BIOSs are pretty good at doing this job for you but others are not and require manual clearing and resetting of the defaults.

If the Soyo SYP4 Dragon Ultra has a jumper for clearing CMOS memory plus removing the powersupply plug from the MOBO (Also make sure you have removed the 60Hz plug from the wall socket), then follow the instructions in your manual for clearing the CMOS memory. If it doesn't have a jumper, etc., I would still review what SOYO says about clearing CMOS memory and following those instructions to the letter.

If all else fails, you certainly can restore the earlier BIOS but you will still need to follow the CMOS memory instructions.

Last but not least, call your power company to schedule a power outtage during the time of the BIOS change. If it happens you can always tell the wife you need a new MOBO because the @#$%^&* power company zapped the one you were working on! That's what the Capt'n and I do when we muck around with BIOS!!:-lol

Thanks for the help guys. After going over my BIOS item for item I noticed that the (GW-Write Mask AGP Request) had been changed to Disabled I changed it back to Enabled and everything seems to work fine. I now have everything set to exactly as it was before the BIOS update. Is it still necessary to set the BIOS to the default settings and then reset from there?

    Thanks
    Chuck
