Thread: To Techies: have a look at this frequency jumper

  1. Default To Techies: have a look at this frequency jumper

The FS-ACOF upgrade battle goes on...

    The motherboard is a MS6340M v5.

Look at the little grey bit please, to change the FSB from 100MHz to 133MHz does a jumper shorting connector have to be bought or something?

    Thanks

    Chris

From the illustration I would think that WITH the jumper the fsb is at133,and WITHOUT the jumper fsb100,similar to HDD's where you have to configure it as master or slave.Sometimes you have to jump one set of pins or the other, and sometimes remove it althogether, depending on the manufacturer. You should try it out,you can look in the BIOS to see what fsb you have after you have jumpered the pins. You can't harm the system when you try it out,if your system will only work with fsb100(for example)the BIOS will "fail safe" down to 100 when you set it at 133 with the mobo jumper. It's more likely that the system fsb is 133,only relatively old systems use 100.Suck it and see!

Sputnik04, what I am asking is can a jumper for the above be bought at a computer store? so I can set it to 133MHz? I know it may seem a little obvious it can but I am not sure, especially for this specific motherboard model.

Sorry if I misunderstood your question, normally you get a jumper with the mobo.I would think that your local techie shop will have one lying around somewhere, like I said in my last post, with some HDD's you need to remove the jumper altogether depending on the configuration,so when the shop doesn't need it,they save them in the workshop as spares for the future.BTW,in the past I have also bridged the pins with a piece of wire and a soldering iron, but ya gotta be slick, wouldn't recommend it for beginners!Hope this helps,

Chris, I have thousands of the darn things lol, but not much use to you in Lancs.. :-(

get a piece of wire - plastic coated - thin stuff, cut it about 1.5 inches long, push one end over one pin, the other over the other one.. dont cut back the insulation, the pin will go inside the insulation and make great contact.

that should sort you out till you get a jumper, as the other poster said, ask at your local tech store, or even pcworld, they will have plenty in the service dept... just dont let them touch it lol... bunch 'o' amateurs :-lol

Aww man, you guys fly by the seat of your pants!

Cap'n nice to see a man your stature condescending to jumper level. As you and Sputnik04 say, they should be somewhere in a tech store, lying around or for sale even.

    Thanks guys.

Guess what? when I looked inside my computer - I should have done that first shouldn't I? - I seen a small green hollow cuboid over ONE of the pins. You know what that means? its set the FSB at 100MHz and all I have to do is put it over BOTH of the pins to set it to 133MHz.

    Silly me.

BTW Yorkshiremen and Lancashiremen are "Northeners" to Londoners and "Sassenachs" to the likes of me, he he.
