This pics were taken from airliners.net. I think this pilot is a really good one, and he was landing a 747 at kai tak! this is really something. Also notice the other plane on the taxiway... i wonder what the pilot must have been thinking...

A little tip: Use the URL which is just above the photos at airliners.net. Much, much shorter.

Actually, I believe it was a relatively common occurance for pilots to slightly overshoot the turn to land on the runway, given the number of aircraft that landed there.

I don't have a url for it, but there's a video file of another 747 doing exactly the same thing lurking somewhere..... Almost planted an engine on the runway, too....

I would have hated to see the passengers when the captain got out the cockpit.
It might be just me but that last pic doesnt look like its the same plane. The other 3 pics, u can see the winglets (747-400), but the last one u cant see any. Looks like a 742 or 743.

Same plane in the last pic. Look closely at RH wingtip for winglet, and looks like the left one disappeared due to alignment with paint line on runway.

Anyways, another case of people worshipping pilots as gods. This guy should have had his license suspended at least, for not only risking the lives of his own pax, but those in that taxiing plane as well. Low, slow, banked, oops...I stalled here 100' off the deck and aimed at that Airbus (or whatever).

Look here [http://www.aviationpics.de/] for the video of the 747 (I believe it's KAL) pulling another funky one.

If you want to suggest that, then i suggest you ask that every pilot who flew to Kai Tak has his license suspended, as this is (was)very common!

You have got to be kidding!! Are you crazy or what? This airport was well known for this kind of approach. You couldn't even park your car in a Wal Mart parking lot with the same skill these pilots used to land at this now closed but famous Airport. What you need to do is get out Flt Sim 2000 or get the Hong Kong add-on and check it out for yourself. Imagine trying to pull off this kind of approach and touch down, then add the winds off the sea. Hey these guy's are professionals. Maybe we should pull your drivers license for parking to close to the shopping carts in Wal Mart last week. Now go to your room until you can learn to land a 747 under these conditions.

How come they would have their licenses suspended?

I just downloaded that airport, holy crap its tough!
from one side there are huge mountains and the other is a tough water approach.
I was able to put it down 2 out of 3 times.

    Hi All,

I just wanted to add, that this is the easier approach, after China opened up the airspace of MainLand China for the approach this pilot is sweating through right there. Before that there was only the approach over the bay, which came in over Queen Liz mtn and then split the Bank of Hong Kong tower and another very tall building. I remember looking out the window, unfortunately never the ones up front, at the buildings just off the wingtips. Seemingly close enough to touch.
I know that only very few crews of each major airline flew into this airport. So revoking this pilots licence....no way man.

    Happy Landings
