Thread: Overclocking

1. Default Overclocking

I've noticed that some people are able to overclock their CPU with no problem. One of those people is tjkotula. I have the same motherboard as he and the xp1900 CPU, but every time I try to overclock it or even go to 133 FSB it locks up and refuses to reboot. I have to do the default jumper thing... Can any one give me some advise? I have to set the bios to 130 FSB for it to reboot.

Well the setup (bios) of your computer is probaly what is holding you back (as long as your cpu is truly overclockable)

Last time I overclocked (just 10%), my power supply was burned.
The best is spent some money and buy a faster cpu.

LAST EDITED ON Mar-02-03 AT 05:19PM (EST)[p]What kind of cooling system do you have? How much you can o/c depends a lot on cooling. I, for example, have a ThermalTake Volcano 7 and Arctic Silver 3 Thermal Grease for the CPU, plus two case fans. Then I've got a ThermalTake Copper GeForce 4 Cooler for my video card plus more Arctic Silver 3 and that is what allows me to take the video card up so high.

But a lot of times, there are some chips that are just luckier than others for one reason or another. I know a neighbor who took his XP1800+ to XP2200+ speeds on air cooling, although he was using one of those fancy, top of the line motherboards from Soyo.

Presently, I'm at my limit as I've tried going higher and the system simply locks up on entry into Windows and I have to restart, head to BIOS and clock down.

Water cooling might allow me to go higher, but somehow I doubt that because if I go any higher than what I'm at now, the CPU doesn't overheat or anything. It just halts.

EDIT: What BIOS do you run? The lastest one allows you to install 2400 and 2600 CPU's and I think it's version 5.6. Mine came with 5.5 installed and I flashed it in case I ever upgrade in the next year. It also fixes an error or two.

I agree with you, you're right as always.I found I could o'c my XP2200 to 1920Hz(11.5x166)with a Titan cooler that I had installed. But that mother was LOUD!So I fitted the Actic cooler that I now have..Result?It won't go above 1833Hz(11x166) The 87Hz less ain't such a loss, but the new cooler runs at 20db,instead of nearly 50!My comp.is in the living room,it's made my wife very happy!

You've got some serious cooling power then. It must just be your chip. That does happen.

What do you mean it locks up at 133FSB? 133 is the default speed for your CPU, and having it at 130 is UNDERclocking. You must have something set wrong, or your temps are too high.

With my Koolance case, I can overclock from 2.17Ghz to 2.33Ghz without any problems. On my other machine, I have a 2.133Ghz chip that I unlocked and can overclock to 2.73Ghz with my Prometia super cooling unit.

If you take the time to connect and cut certain bridges on the chip, you can unlock the chip and overclock as far as you can cool.

I have a MSI K3Ultra2 Mainboard and an Athlon XP 2000+ with the FSB set at 135 Mhz. It works fine, but I do not notice any performance jumps in any application. Unfortunately, if I do not restart my computer every ten hours or so, the computer freezes for two or three seconds every now and then.
