Default Microsoft Sidewinder Precision Pro HELP

    Can anyone help!
I am running a Microsoft Sidewinder Precision Pro with Windows XP, FS2002. My system works fine with the joystick disabled and can run FS2002 at a fairly high frame rate with no ill effects. When I enable the joystick the frame rate drops momentarily to zero then picks up again to the desired frame rate. Hence a very jerky simulation. Can someone direct me to a download, updated driver for Windows XP for FS 2002 for the above joystick.
Any other suggestions would be greatly appeciated. I am trying to exhaust every avenue available before a new joystick is purchased.

Is your joystick plugged into the game port or is it USB? Have you updated WinXP with SP1 and pre-SP2 updates? What version of DirectX are you using? Have you updated the drivers for your controller chips, and sound (especially if the joystick is plugged into a game port)?
