Default Cant Load FS 2002 into new system with xp

I have just had a new computer built for me.

Athlon xp 2gig
512 DDR RAM
MSI KT4 Ultra Motherboard
60 gig DDR drive
Windows XP home edition

When I tried to load FS 2002 into it I get a problem message during loading the first disk.
Setup failed to extract files from E:\Aircraft CAB
Then says I may not have enough memory and some files are corrupt!
Help!

Sounds like your FS2k2 CD-ROMs might be corrupted. How long as it been since you've used them? They might have gotten scratched or fingerprinted or dusty, preventing data from being properly read. Try gentle cleaning the CD (No harsh chemicals. I've heard it's safe to use CD-cleaner liquid that's sold in stores. Soft cloth) and inspecting it for visible scratches or damage.

Not enough memory? Strange. Check the installed amount and make sure you aren't running any other RAM-hogging programs during installation (Anti-virus utilities are prime targets).

Sound Blaster Live! 5.1

Think you've got computer problems? You haven't until you've installed the latest version of FS!

Another possibility is that your CD drive may not be compatible. If you have another drive in the machine try that one instead.

Hope this helps,

This is a really basic answer that is probably totally irrelevant but are most CD drives not the D: path?

Yes as long as you:

a) don't have more than one hard drive or

b) don't have your hard drive partitioned.

Extra drives/partitions take precedence in the lettering over CD drives.

Well, not necessarily... the computer I'm working on uses Q: as the CD Rom drive and I installed the operating system and I don't remember anywhere you could select the CD Rom dirve letter. (Windows 98 SE.) I know we're talking about XP but couldn't the same thing happen. Food for thought.

In Win98, you can select the drive letter from the device manager.

I did the same thing in XP, but it's a different route and I can't actually remember how I did it now lol. It's in the help files somewhere.

LAST EDITED ON Feb-03-03 AT 11:12PM (EST)[p]Hi there

I had the same problem (only with Win2000, but I think it is related to the same issue). I entered the error message into the Microsoft Knowledge Base, and got the following solution. Go to the link below. You will have to cut and past the ENTIRE address line into your browser as it is below to get to the help file.

Good luck!

The compatibility issue of your hardware, especially your CD rom has to be explored. You can download from Microsoft a compatibility checker which will automatically inform you of any potential hardware problems.

I upgraded from Windows ME to XP home, but also had to change my CD rom. This is also true with some versions of application software. I use the computer mainly for running FS2002 and it certainly runs better with XP, but there are some drawbacks as mentioned.
