LAST EDITED ON Apr-27-03 AT 10:51AM (EDT)[p]I suspected this is was HP/Compaq laptop based on the AMD processor and the price alone.

I've heard too many bad things about HP to buy anything from them.

When I get a new laptop for college in a couple of years, it's probably going to be a Dell. Even though the price may be higher and I'll have to buy something with a Intel Pentium-M, at least I can be sure that I'll actually get what I'm paying for - Dell's service and warranty plus quality, name brand parts beyond just the processor.

This may be a perfectly good laptop, but the price is just a little suspicious.

I have no comments regarding HP computers, since I've never used one. But I do have one of their printer/fax/scanner/copiers that's worked with excellent results and no breakdowns for over two years now.

I've been using a 2.0 GHz pentium 4 Compaq laptop I bought new at best buy for $1099. - $300. in mail in rebates = $799.
for 6 months and have had no problems with it, I even knocked it off a 3 foot high table and it hit pretty hard and it still works fine.
It's not an AMD but I hear people raving about them all the time so it can't be that bad.

There's always good and bad batches, too.

My office has leased me a Dell Latitude for the past year or two. The most expensive version they make.

Thank goodness for Dell service <wry grin>. The motherboard's been replaced, the power supply flakes out with any voltage fluctuation and has burned out for several of us using these, and now the screen goes all sorts of colors at times.

Other than that, I love it.

Sometimes you just get a lemon.

Looks like they sold out of the Compaq, they have this HP for $749. though.
