Quick Way To Increase Your Framerates

I tried a little experiment and made a pleasent discovery, by reducing the refresh rate on my monitor from 75Hz. to 60Hz. my framerates showed a nice improvement.
Measurements taken while sitting on the ramp at La Guardia (KLGL Parking 18 - Ramp GA Medium) in the stock Microsoft Beechcraft Barron.
1024x768x32@75Hz. = 13-15 FPS
1024x768x32@60Hz. = 20-22 FPS
The only thing changed between tests was the moniter refresh rate on the display properties - adapter tab.
System specs.
MSI K7N420 motherboard
AMD AlthonXP 1600+ (overclocked to 1800+)
256 MB PC2100 DDR ram
Gainward GForce 3 TI 450 128MB DDR Jumbo Golden Sample (GForce 3 TI 200 GPU with factory overclock(overclocked to TI 500 speed ( 240x500)))
Windows ME
Video driver version 41.09
All display sliders max'ed
Anti Aliasing 2x
Antisotropic Filtering off

This little tweek may not be for everyone,some people will see a unpleasent flickering on their moniter at 60 Hz.
But if you are useing an older video card and need a little better framerates to enjoy the game give it a try.

I am going to give this one a tryout, it sounds good to me. However, try using a freeware program called 'killwin' which can be found at www.borgking.de/bk-soft/killwin.htm. Use the 'shutdown all procedures' option and then start FS2002. The CPU can now spend all (or most of) it's efforts running your favourite program for you!

why not simply turn off the 'sync to refresh' in the graphics driver ;-)

I notice that article is dated July 2000. Does it still have relevance today with faster procesors, faster graphics cards, faster RAMDAC, larger RAM - and FS2002? I doubt it.

It made no difference on my system, other than to slow mouse click responses to a point where it looked like the screen had locked. The important thing is, I think, to have a refresh rate that is in sync with the frame rate - either forced through software (the best way) or manually. Average frame rate 25fps? The try 75 Herz. Average frame rate 30fs? Then don't.

Anyway, the article talks about benchmarking, not playing games. When benchmarking the important thing is to get a true reading of the capability of the machine, not something artificially liited by software. Gaming is a whole different slice of pie.

For benchmarking, Leave VSYNCH OFF. For games, leave VSYNCH ON.

The thing is there is X amount of memory bandwidth avalable and every time the RAMDAC redraws the screen it has to read the frame buffer reducing the amount of bandwidth avalable to the GPU.
Tom Pabst (sp?) explaines it better than I can on pages 3 and 4 of the article that I linked to.

If you really care for your eyes I would not at all recommend reducing the refresh rate.
